Try and make sure it's got zoom... mine doesn't and I really miss it!

Try and make sure it's got zoom... mine doesn't and I really miss it!

Make sure it is Optical Zoom and not just digital. I would also recommend, Sony, Cannon and Olympus.

Other things to check for - Battery Life, Media Format (Micro Drive, Memory Stick, Mini CD etc), Resolution but at £200 I would guess your looking for a Good 2 or 3 Mega Pixel camera and Total LAG (Overall delay between pressing the button and the picture being taken)

Have a look here http://www.dpreview.com

That's where I did my research before I bought my one. Once you've found the one you like then search on http://www.kelkoo.co.uk for the best price, I save £100 by doing that.
Have a look at this page - http://www.kelkoo.co.uk/b/a/o_100795193_canon_digital_cameras_under_249.html

Cheers

Avoid anything with slow autofocus, shutter delay ("lag" as Niall mentioned) bad chromatic abberation (purple fringing on areas of high contrast) - anything more than 3megapixel is OTT if you are only printing 6x4's (Max size for 3mp is about 8x10).
The higher the mega pixel count the less images you can store on a give media card at a set image size.
DP Review is a very good site and is a UK one, despite a lot of links being to US firms. Phil Askey has certainly worked hard to produce a great resource.

I just bought a fuji finepix2800zoom it is a 2M ega pixel camera , It has 6X opitcal zoom which is excellent, it uses smartmedia cards which are quite cheap and uses 4 AA Batteries, I use Ni Mh which last better than normal alcaline type

see here for the camera

And try www.7dayshop.com for batteries chargers and memory cards.

If you want to copmare different prices to buy cameras online try using www.kelkoo.co.uk

I am on my 4th digital camera but have ended up with a Canon A200 Powershot and it has never dropped a shot yet. The previous ones, Jenoptik and Vivitar failed miserably in flash mode.
Make sure whatever camera you have has an optical viewfinder as well because if it is LCD only you will see nothing in bright sunlight.

The camera was 190 but is in index now for about 140-150. I saw the A300 in Gatwick Airport on Friday for 150 and it is 3 megapixel.

It uses CF cards which are readily available and I saw a 128mb CF card in Elgin on Saturday for 23 quid. At 1024x768 with fine detail thats about 400 excellent photos and around 800 at less resolution.

Hope this helps

New camera has just hit the mat of Caithness.Org HQ.

A nice shiney, 5 mega pixel sony mavica, wi the funcy lens etc.

Those 640x480 pics of recent weeks have been giving me eye strain.

If "him-that-takes-the-photays" reads the manual we should be treated to some lurvely pics from now on ?;o)
