What to do with an old church??

Hi Caithness

I would welcome ideas from the local community on what to do with an old church that I have recently purchased, do I keep it as it is /develop it into flats etc., or use it as a business base and if so what kind of business is needed in the area?? I would welcome all thoughts no matter how "off the wall". :roll:

If you're hoping to gain income from your purchase looks like it will have to be a business base. As other orgers have said, it will depend on location of church etc. what's your field of expertise Jools?

Turn it into flats there is always people looking for somewhere to live:D Would be pretty cool living in a old church.

Tastefully and in keeping with its history and surroundings make it into a centre for information on the area, tours, walks, nature and the like rentable accomodation and or craft space with coffee shop complete with area for internet access.

OR make it into AFFORDABLE UNITS for LOCALS.


Or do your research for a business that is required in the area ie opticians maybe? (see Specsavers thread)

I would love to live in a converted church also, have seen a few naff refurbs though.

the high class dining venue would of been a great idea for the Bruan church imagine the beautiful views you would have there & plenty of parking too.

Make it into a night club :D Ive been to a few clubs that used to be churches and they look really smart...and make it cheaper than £8 to get in, with decent music and I'll definately be there :lol:

How about an amusement arcade, pool tables etc. or some sort of centre that young people can go to, maybe an internet cafe.

A good idea for a church would be a sort of "drop in/community" centre where kids can hang out on Computers,pool etc and also Old folks/young mothers can meet up for a chat.
That way it would help bridge the gap between the young and old and may help in getting the crime rate down. You know what kids are like they will play up but they are less likely to be "nasty" towards the elderly.

I know this wouldnt be a particularly "rich" scheme in terms of money but definitely in the "feelgood" factor, surely Funding would be available and would help pay for the cost of renovation?
As the building would have a large centre space maybe private functions,club meetings etc could take place to supplement the income?
Volunteers could be sought to work there from the long term unemployed at the jobcentre, so keeping costs down.

With the roof height an old church makes a great location for an indoor climbing wall if you're looking at another community/commercial use.

If it was in or near a town I've often thought we could do with more sheltered housing up here for retired people. Added bonus would be to free up homes for young families etc.

I like the ideas put forward by Errogie, teenybash and jings00.
Having said that it would depend quite a bit where your church is situated and what other places were available in the area already.
A place for theatre/ arts / indoor play centre.......the list is endless.
