View Full Version : Draughty letterbox

I am trying to eliminate draughts to make the house a bit warmer.

One of the problems is the front door letterbox which is also letting in the rain. Not sure why as it is a really good one with a heavy spring and brushes inside.
I've tried stuffing it with a cloth but that hasn't helped.

So any ideas please?

Thanks!

Buy one of these "outside" American style "letter boxes" and seal up your door.

The rain is probably coming in between the letterbox and the door where the hole is cut out. Better get it fixed before the rain goes for the door.

Dounreay black tape will stop the wind and rain coming in, sadly it stops the mail too

A better letterbox would be another solution one that opens out the way and the fit a letter box draft excluder on the inside. We had the same problem with our last letter box now no problem.

Bad Manners can I ask where you bought your letter box draft excluder from. I din't even know you could get such a thing.

W D Ross near the harbour in Thurso keeps that sort of stuff. The ones with the brushes top and bottom that fit on the inside used to work for us.

My letter box is also drafty, the amount of times I have answered the door to no-one is ridiculous. Might take up the suggestions made

That's the problem I have too when it's windy.

For those with a wooden door and an outward-opening letterbox flap an easy and cheap method is to use a square cup hook (http://www.toolstation.com/images/library/stock/webbig/61069.jpg). Screw it in next to the bottom of the flap so that a quick quarter turn by the postie will 'unlock' the flap, and a quarter turn back will 'lock' it again.

That's what we used to have. A metal flap which opened out the way but the wind always blew it about so it would keep hitting off the door and making a noise. One we have at the moment is a strong flap which opens in the way, with brushes on the inside. Maybe one like this with a flap on the inside as well. Or have then yet invented a letter box with a stong spring flap on both the outside and inside which both open in the way so that you push the letters in past both of them and maybe a rubber seal around the edge as well. Surley that would work?

Perhaps it's time for a new section on the forum...we can call it Bob's Tip of the Week. [lol]

Good idea Jox, Bob should do a tip of the week the scope is endless, dieting tips, techy advice to letter box tips. I'll mention it to him later today!

Good luck with your ecoflap Lizz, hope it solves the problem.

By the way. I met Alice and she's lovely, lol.
