Does anyone know if old 50p coins are accepted at banks as legal tender. If not does anyone know if they are of value to a charity. I have 40-50 which were used for an old electricity meter which I have replaced and the coins are no longer of use.

50p coins are worth the same no matter their age; unless someone knows different and that there are collectors of old coins. Mind you, 50p coins are not that old are they?

Ask your bank for the special coin bags for 50ps, fill them up accurately and point out the one with the odds and you will be refunded......or, as you said, give them to charity.

In 1997 a new smaller version of the 50p was introduced weighing 8.00 grams and with a diameter of 27.30 mm.
With the reduction in size the old larger coins have now been withdrawn from circulation, and demonetized with effect from 28th February 1998, although they can still be exchanged at banks.
