Have a look at http://www.wickheritage.org/johnston-gallery.asp they have introduced great new images from the Johnston collection covering Wick, Thurso and Latheronwheel, all for sale too. Well worth a look, especially if you're "into" nostalgia.Mosser.

Thanks for the link Mosser; I love the recycled boats! I think it is time to glean these money saving ideas for the recession that is looming....:)

Those are great pictures. They have mis-labelled one though, so I shall have to contact them.

fabtastic link!

I do not remember seeing a ruined castle at Thurso. But then I wasn't looking for one.
What happened to the building...it looked so er...robust, in the picture.Magnificent.
Fire perhaps?

The roof and the upper ornamental towers were romoved in the early 50s to avoid paying rates. It was a common ploy amongst landowners who had more cottages on their estates than brains in those days.
Some of the ornamental stone can still be seen in the rive3r opposite the British legion in Thurso.

Great photos. One of them looked like a group of miners.

Great photos. One of them looked like a group of miners.

They were workers from the old meal mill which once operated in Huddart Street Wick

It was a sin to let Thurso castle go to ruin -- what a beautiful building it was.

I have to agree. The Thurso castle in the photo looks more beautiful than the ruin I saw when I was there.
