Is that water erosion and where are they? Quite an amazing formation.

I think its facinating that you can see so many different types of stone in close proximity to each other but from very different era.:eek:

Stones can migrate around the coast, but some unusual types were possibly carried to Caithness as ballast in sailing ships coming here from all over to pick up grain or flagstone paving.

These are exactly the type of stones i am looking for for my fish tank.i have checked out our local reiss beach, but have not come across anything that looks like that yet.Nice pics

They were taken on Reiss beach.(down to the golf club, turn left on beach about 200 yards.) It depends which way the wind has been blowing to uncover the sand off them.

Its erosion from the ever-so-slightly acidic rain reacting with the limestone. You can see some similar erosion around Caithness where the flagstones are limey (eg Strathy).
