View Full Version : Final Meal Requests

I've just "stumbled" upon this (http://dilbert.homelinux.org:8081/linuxkungfu/finalmeals.htm).

It's a list of people executed in Texas along with details of their requested final meal.

Hidden away in amongst the expected steaks and cheeseburgers was a guy, John Elliott, who asked for:

"One cup of hot tea (from teabags) and six chocolate chip cookies"

I don't know what he was executed for but, for some reason, this just made me feel quite sorry for the guy. Rather than the mound of food some requested, all he wanted was the comfort we all get from a nice brew with biccies. :~(

Couldn't get the link to open for me (dodgy ISP) but I suspected it wasn't for stealing batteries. ;)

An horrific crime for sure... but the cup of tea and biscuits just added a little bit of humanity to the monster. Made me think about what it must be like to know you're about to be led into a room and killed.

Can't say I really agree with the death penalty... :confused

I had a quick squizz at the site, there are indeed some strange requests, who on earth could eat 2 dozen scrambled eggs?

I don't think they deserve to choose their last meal, stale bread and water is good enough

I stumbled on this one (http://www.stumbleupon.com/toolbar/#topic=Astronomy&url=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.rense.com%252Fgeneral72 %252Fsize.htm), I'm amazed, I never really thought about the size of earth in relation to other planets, definitely worth a look

I don't know, I think locking them up for ten years and then killing them is punishment enough. Giving them a dozen eggs or a steak before pushing the plunger is hardly being lenient.

Interesting :)

I'll add one more 'stumble' to counter the miserable one I started the thread with.

Maybe some of them order so much in the hope they die from over-eating or there is a nasty accident in the bowel region when it's their turn to get 'fried'. Whats with the diet cokes too? Not as if they have to watch their health!

I wouldn't be so sure. Many people have been "pardoned" for their crimes after being executed. I am sure that they feel great comfort in the fact that their names have been cleared, even if they are already dead. That is one reason why I am absolutely against the death penalty: even one life taken by miscarriage of justice is one life too many.

What about the lives taken by the miscarriage of justice that is a not guilty or not proven verdict where the offender goes on to murder again.

"Two wrongs don't make a right" springs to mind...

What about the lives taken by the miscarriage of justice that is a not guilty or not proven verdict where the offender goes on to murder again.

So people should be convicted on suspicion to avoid future crimes...... ????????? minority report thinking going on here??????? Do you think I am saying murderers should not be punished?

If there is a not guilty/not proven verdict and that person then commits a crime, they are still not guilty of the first crime. I am not talking about proving people guilty, which should be done with good investigative skills and evidence. When you kill someone for a crime they did not commit it is exactly the same a person falling victim to a criminal that escaped justice: it is murder. Saying sorry afterwards, in either case, does not make things right, does it?

Aside from that, justice is only as good as what you can afford, as is reflected by the imbalance in the economical and ethnic makeup of those condemned to death, the criminal population and the general population (ie: if you are poor, uneducated and of an ethnic minority you are much more likely to be on death row, for the same crime, than if you are white, educated or monied). Just looking at OJ simpson's trial (for murder) which proves that: those who are guilty can get away with it if they have the money and contacts.

Above all Changi, two wrongs never make a right.
