I think the sentiments of the poem (Slow Dance) are what matters and the story about the little girl dying of cancer is a frequently used ploy to get people to read similar poems and take notice.
I agree it is a sick way of getting our attention and would like to think that we would take notice of the poems anyway.
Then again, maybe we wouldn't.
