I usually go down twice a year but haven't been this year and was planning an autumn trip so thought I'd try the new NatEx East Coast line and finished up in the usual Transport Direct website. Must admit usually I fly as anything else, except bus, is too expensive but must make an effort to be green.

NatEx don't know there is a bus from Wick to Inverness. TransportDirect demand you enter a departure time - I don't know you silly people, that's why I need a timetable. easyjet only seem to fly on alternate days. Made the mistake of doing what one suggested - enter exact locations each end - and finished up walking most of the way.

What I do now know is all about carbon emissions savings. If I train instead of fly I'll save 1,111 kettle boilings.

Well I suppose that's useful

Hi, try this website:-

http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/buytickets/index.html

I used it for booking tickets from Wick to London and found it very easy to use. It gives you all the options available and the tickets arrived very quickly. Just click on "all UK tickets" to start

Hope it helps.

Tried Megabus (Inverness to London?) http://www.megabus.com/uk/

Thanks scorrie. I used to use that website and will try it again but usually find trains too expensive - which is ridiculous. Wonder if they tell you about your carbon savings as well? Wouldn't mind all the walking involved if it didn't mean pulling my case. Have also spent ages trying to find reasonable single room in London - so much cheaper for two.

A few days in London costs more than a holiday abroad [disgust] .

Wow! Just been on the website and for the dates I typed in (October 2nd-October 9th) the return journey from Inverness to London was just £34.50 including booking fee!!! :) Now that IS cheap!

The bus is definitely cheapest but oh so long and uncomfortable, especially with the journey from here on top. I did it once for £1 with a crazy special offer NatEx were doing - just couldn't resist it. Think Megabus might be more comfortable but it's still a long ride.

Can't remember whether bus or train saved more kettle boils.

Megabus; I think they don't have kids rates, they pay same as adults?

Think I've only once been lucky with these, they're usually not available when I want to travel. Might try again though.

Before you book ensure it is not cheaper to buy two singles than to buy a return - have found it is frequently cheaper to buy two singles than a return.
