thanks.........do you remember Alex and his horse and cart?I dont remember much..just that he did deliverys from the mart and maybe coal, any small flittings. He had a store at the top of barrogill street, where he kept Polly, who was a black and white clydesdale. I hope that helps a bit.:) In fact I believe there is a picture of them in the latest Caithness book, sorry I dont know the name of the book.

I racked a few old brains to find out about Alex'ie Matt as he was known he lived at the top of Albert Street and done various moving jobs with the horse and cart as well as rag and bone , now the last horse he had was a clydesdale horse, black with a white maine and his name was Dick.

Why are you asking anyway dirdyweeker?

yes my sister once rode on his horse and cart. He definately kept the horse in Rutherford Street and I have seen plenty photos of them both but just wondered for a quiz answer what the horses name was. Somehow from the old grey matter still deep within my brain cells 'Polly' sounds the most familiar. Mind you he probably replaced Polly eventually. I certainly remember them both well but not the horses name!

a friend of mine's father worked for the trading standards years ago and had a complaint from the afore mentioned house holder who said that their living room carpet was ruined because their was sparks coming off the coal, a long investigation ensued where tests were done on the coal only to transpire that they had been welding in the sitting room and were trying to get compensation for their carpet from the coal yard

Yes , the question has obviously triggered a few more animal/horse stories. What a laugh!I too remember well the horse in the upstairs room! It was in the house on the road to the airport. And, the story about the smell from the horse was just as I heard it long ago. SO....are we sticking with Polly for Alex Mathieson's horse?

The horse Alec had about the early 60s was called Polly Alec was a perfect gentleman he flitted us out of the backside to dunbar street in 1960 and the cost was 7/6d That was for the whole household furniture
At the time Martins were delivering milk with a white horse and cart but cant remember what the horse was called?

I thought this post was about finding a name about the poor horse, but never mind all the stories were a laugh so keep em going, any way back to the the poor old horse's name after all my pull outs we a dram here there and every where i can tell you the story of the horse called dick.

Dick was the last horse owned by alex'ie matt (fact) black clydesdale horse with a white maine, stabled in Rutherford Street and alex'ie lived in Albert Street.
His father William Matheson haulage contractor and undertaker had 2 grey mares, which pulled a dray 1 of the grey horses was known to be called Polly,Other horses name is still to be found out.His stable was originally in Ducksie.
Alex'ie had 3 horses that we know of after his father passed on. Mary, Ruby and finally dick.
Why would anyone want to call a male horse Polly?
