15th September - A great night had by all.

A nice turn out of members new and old (21 in total).

The 1st half featured a superb talk & visual display by Martina Cross on photographic composition and examples of what judges look out for when entering competitions, what works and what doesn't.

Very enlightening. These Judges are a funny bunch.

The 2nd half saw Club members displaying their work and voting what images were to go forward to the Thurso Camera Club Highland Challenge entries Shortlist (see elsewhere on the Caithness.org Photography Bulletin Board).

Watch this space for Details on our next meeting (6th October).

Another very interesting evening last night, Geoff Bates on the subject of 'Bird Photography.'

Not only did Geoff show examples of his final images but explained the best way to get into a good vantage point to take the photographs.

The use of 'Hides' (these can even resemble and operate as cars - you had to be there to understand).

A brilliant and informative evening and to top it all the final entry for the 'Highland Challenge' inter club competition.

See you all in a fortnight.

Note: Change of Venue - for one night only.

Meeting to be held in the Orange Room, Park Hotel Thurso (The Usual Venue Miller Academy is Closed due to a School Holiday) at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Subject this meeting is 'Aeriel Photography' by Sergeant Ross Tilly of RAF Kinloss.
(We're talking of photo's from up in the air, not of your favourite Sky Dish!).

These talks from outside organisations have proven to be very interesting and popular.
Last year we had the man in charge of the mobile speed cameras in the Highland catchment area (if you pardon the pun), very enlightening.

Come along and see for yourself.

Next update Next Week - See you then.

The last meeting on the subject of 'Aeriel Photography' by Sergeant Ross Tilly of RAF Kinloss was excellent.

Ross showed us examples of the varied work carried out by Service photographers - That of the ceremonial type images, standard group photography (crew with the aircraft as a backdrop). Portraiture, in the field (literally).

A great night had by all, here's looking forward to the next one.

Back to the Usual Venue again - Miller Academy 7 o'clock for a 7.30 start.

Studio Night with Models from North Highland College.

An Annual event which allows the Club members to dust off their Cameras and maybe learn something about Portraiture that they never knew before.

TCC has it's own studio Flash Gear so all you need is a camera and the enthusiasm to get out there and bag some shots to be proud of.

North Highland College has been supplying models over the years and our models get copies of the images taken on the night for their trouble.

This is a meeting of two halves

1st half: a talk by Michael Draper of Dunnet on the art of "Travel Photography."

Straight after half time we move onto the highlight of the evening (oops! sorry Michael), well maybe not the highlight but it's up there with the best of them, the TCC Critique.

What you may ask is a Critique? Well I'll tell you.

Club members have the opportunity to submit 3 images each (Print or Digital Image) and our Panel of Experts discuss their merits and suggest possible ways of creating a better image next time around.

A very worthwile exercise in the long run and can also boost your confidence with regards to showing your work.

Normal Starting time 7pm for 7:30 start in Miller Academy.

I Hope to see you there.

7pm for a 7.30pm start (socialising time).

Well if you're ready and have got to grips with your latest Digital Camera (Was Santa good to you?).

Tonight's topic:

A talk by Neil Buchan "Understanding your camera features", what does the settings Av,M,P,Tv, A-DEP really mean? Why do they exist? Can't we just use the auto setting?

Well you can, but just sit down and listen to Neil for a while tonight and your creativity, composition, exposures could be greatly improved and by the way of a reward this shall boost your confidence and hey presto you'll be on the way to being up there with the DeeMacs, Ravens, North Lights and Psyberyeti's, posting your photos left right and centre on the org forum.

We're apparently a very friendly club and we'd love you to join us.

See you Monday night? Great, Usual Venue - Miller Academy Art Rooms (Princes Street entrance).

In the lead up to the last meeting on the 2nd February I jokingly mentioned Gorillas (Relating to the movie 'Gorillas in the Mist') the main topic was indeed Gorillas but this was 'Gorillas NOT to be missed.'

A fantastically presented evening by Colin Gregory showing some wonderful images captured in Rwanda last year.

Next Meeting 16th February in Caithness Horizons, I'll tell you more later in the week.

The next meeting of the Thurso Camera Club on Monday 2nd March, will now be held in the Caithness Horizons audio-visual theatre (Thurso Town Hall). We will be showing a DVD (with sound track) of the national entries (400 in number) to the annual and highly regarded Dingwall Camera Club photo competition.

The critique session may be postponed to April if the DVD runs too long. Due to the cost of hiring the venue and the supply of tea/coffee and very tasty homemade shortbread, the subs for the evening will be £2.

An open invitation to members and potential new members to meet outside the Surfer's Cafe, Thurso Harbour at 9:15am.

It shall then be decided where we're heading for a photographic extravaganza.

An opportunity to bounce ideas off of each other, find out how your fellow photographers actually manage to get that all important shot and maybe even get a chance to try out that super lens that someone else has (If you're lucky).

Obviously weather may be a deciding factor when it comes to deciding on where we're going so be prepared for any eventuality.

There may also be an opportunity to car share or get a lift if you've no car.

TAKE NOTE: THURSO CAMERA CLUB BEARS NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYONE ATTENDING THE ABOVE BUT FORGETS THAT IT'S MOTHER'S DAY (NOT OUR PROBLEM - YOURS).

Visit to Edward Sutherland's Vintage Car collection in Halkirk.

Most cars will be indoors so take your flash or a bright light. The cars are tightly packed, so close up shots of car details will be the main pics.

Edward has a large selection of vintage cars that are stored in a garage behind Bond's Electrical Shop in Bridge Street, Halkirk (about 250 yards south of the bridge). Meet at the shop front at 7pm, Edward intends to park one or two cars in front of the shop (which is actually closed down).

Hope to see you there.

Note: This is the last Official Meeting of the Season - but keep checking here for updates on our Monthly Summer Outings.
