I watched an old Sweeny film on freeview the other night (about 1978 I think ) Two things that captivated me, one was all the breifings took place with nearly all the coppers smoking and I lost the plot of the film because of the cars of that era . Is it just me that gets excited when I see cars of that era. I had a little Vandam Plas a few years ago and was gutted to have to let it go.:~(http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm196/kevinmilkins/05_17_87.jpg

I had an old austin westminster with the one long seat in the front instead of 2, green leather and the car was a light turqoise green. It ended up in thurso, dont know what happened to it. Nice strong safe car, not like the ones made nowadays.

I can smell that leather seat now Fran.
Jules Holland was on Top Gear the other night and he has a smell fetish as well with old cars.

Used to love the old MKI Escorts they were the ultimate "cool" car that everyone from kids to grandads loved!

I remember everybody used to laugh at the Datsons when they first came to the UK because they were rust buckets and we said " the Japanese car would never catch on".:confused Nice Escort:D

I watch the sweeney for the cars too. Am a lifelong Ford girl and learned to drive in an escort Mk1. Have done the fiesta, escort car with orion engine and finesse estate which I won`t part with now..... it`s going to be my classic. It has a zetec engine and no "go faster stripes" to make it stand out from the rest, but turns heads when it is whizzing past the slow movers uphill.

My first car was a Ford Zephur 6 which was great as I could get about 8 in at a push but it got expensive on petrol which was 73p a gallon, just gone up from about 50p due to problems with Arab-Israeli war. The Government was concerned that we would run out so they brought in the speed limit.
I then got a truimph vitesse convertable (best car ever) and a MK 1 escort for a run around.

First car was an Austin 16, we kept the Carb clear with a gate hinge.
When I was a child (Nineteen hundred and frozen to death) we used to sing a song about Ford:-
If you want to buy a wreck,
Buy a Ford.
4 Buckled wheels and a board.
A rusty tin
with an engine in.
If you want to buy a wreck.
Buy a Ford!

My love affair with fords are now over.Recently had a 95 Escort but sold it as the missus said it was a "Fishbox on wheels"! Got me thinking how many cars on the road now would be considered a classic in years to come? The Focus sticks out for me or maybe the Vectra.

Remember the princess(there was an old joke about getting burned on the exhaust but cant mention it !;)). If memory serves me right did they not re-release the car as an "Ambassador" or was that a slightly differnet version, cant remember sure someone would know.

Is it similar to the joke about a certain former rugby player asking for a coil for a princess?:D

First car was a Mk2 Cortina 1600E RGY 291F...only had it a week, i couldn't afford the insurance.

That would have been about a 1968.
I remember our PE teacher bought one of those brand new.
He was that proud of it he paraded the whole class out of school and down the road for us all to have a look at it.:Razz
I am not supprised the insurance was a bit steep for a younster as that were a fast car

PS I am sure Will Carling wont sue.

Where's the auto-choke, climate/aircon, ABS, PAS, SIPS, traction control, 10 disc cd changer, heated windows/ mirrors/ seats, xenon lights, front and side airbags, safety cell/crumple zone, disc brakes with wear sensors, deformable bumpers, fitted carpets, cupholders, split/fold rear seat etc.

For sure, old cars may be interesting but I'd rather have a modern car. I've owned too many pieces of crap over the years to want to go back to them. However, if I was to get an old car I'd like one of these, which I did own at one time:

My dad bought me a 1957 Wolseley 1500 when I passed my test in 1969. He paid my uncle £60 for it. I once went on the M1 in it and had to do 70 mph to keep up with the traffic and it shook like crazy - it really couldn't manage it. I can still smell it - all smoky and mildewy. I got £40 for it two years later, which I was well pleased with and used the money for gliding lessons, since I could already drive.

My best car was a 1967 Mustang. it was a goer.

I might be muddled with dates. When did the M1 open? I know I went on it in the Wolseley.

1959 or 1960 I think it opened.

I loved my old mini. It was like a skateboard with an engine. You felt like you were going at 80mph, when it was actually about 40!! Drove it til the floor fell out of it...

Mini van...looked bog standard british racing green, with a 1275gt engine in it and two half brieze blocks in the back to keep it balanced on the road. A veritable flying machine. A 1970 model H reg and still on the road in Chester.

Memories. My first car was a Morris Oxford ORN 489. Similar shape to the Austin Cambridge c.1960. I paid £33 for it in '69.. My old Dad went crackers....said it was 'a load of rubbish'. Three weeks later I got a job with a van and he bought the Morris off me for thirty knicker...he ran it for about three years! Sills all rusted rotten and the bodywork painted in grey primer like the battlebusses of Belfast...turn heads it didn't.

I stocked up me wardrobe with some of the thirty quid and spent most of it on ale and discos....the rest I wasted.
