I have Donald Sutherland married to Jean/Jane Miller 15 Jul 1837. Donald was an accountant in Wick. Witnesses to their marriage were James Henderson, Esquire of Pultney Distillery for the groom and John Lawson, Surgeon for the bride.

On the census 1841, 1851, and 1861 they just have that they lived in Argyle Square. In the 1871 census it specifically lists 17 Argyle Square. In the 1881 census I found two of their daughters living at 15 Argyle Square, Donaldina and Jane Sutherland.

A local researcher went to the archives for me in 2000 and came up with the following children for Donald and Jane, all born in Pultney, Wick:

John born 20 Oct 1838
Donald born 31 Aug 1839
James born 28 Apr 1840
Alexander born 12 Jun 1841
Elizabeth born 28 Oct 1842
Donaldina born 25 Jan 1845
John Alexander born 5 May 1847
James born 20 Sept 1849
William Smellie Miller born 16 Nov 1851
James Patrick Doull Calder born 16 Oct 1853
Anne Miller born 13 Feb 1856
Helena born 23 Jan 1858
Jane born 29 June 1859

On James Patrick's birth register, it says:

James Patrick Doull Calder Sutherland son of Donald Sutherland Accountant Pultneytown and his wife Jane Miller was born on the sixteenth day if October eighteen hundred and fifty three and baptized by the Rev William Lillie Witness to the birth William Smellie M.D. and Mrs Margaret Manson.

William Smellie was married to Anne Miller, so there may be a family connection there.

I believe Donald died 25 Apr 1873. I think Jane died before him, but I don't know when. Rev. Lillie is listed as a minister at Wick Parish Church, so I would think that is where they attended church.

If anyone lives in the area and had a digital camera, I would love a picture of 15 and 17 Argyle Square.

I would like to chat with anyone who has information about this family.

Correction to my earlier posting:

After researching on:

http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ (http://freecen.rootsweb.com/)

and

http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/newspapers/ (http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/newspapers/)

I have come to the conclusion that not all of the children that the researcher listed for Donald and Jane Sutherland belong to my Donald and Jane. Here is a revised list:

Donald born 31 Aug 1839 (died November 1842)
Donaldina born 25 Jan 1845
John Alexander born 5 May 1847
James born 20 Sept 1849
William Smellie Miller born 16 Nov 1851
James Patrick Doull Calder born 16 Oct 1853
Anne Miller born 13 Feb 1856
Helena born 23 Jan 1858 (died March 1858)
Jane born 29 June 1859

On the census for 1851 and 1861 they also have a Robert M listed with them as their son, but I couldn't find any information to verify his birth. If anyone has any information about this family I would greatly appreciate talking with you! :)

Thank you!

I'm not sure about Donald's parents but I believe Jean/Jane's parents are Robert Miller and Anne Bain Miller. I also believe that Robert and Anne had a daughter named Anne that married William Smellie, M.D.:

People > Marriages
Smellie, William M.D. to Ann Bain daugher of Robert Miller, merchant Pulteneytown
John O'Groat Journal Friday, February 22, 1850

I think this is the elder Anne's death announcement:

People > Deaths
Bain, Mrs Anne (relict of Robert Miller) Pulteney
John O'Groat Journal Friday, November 1, 1839

I have e-mailed the Wick library to get a copy of these and other records I found that seem to go with the information I have. I know that Donaldina, James Patrick and Jane all went to Kansas, USA.

I need to explore the SMITH SMELLIE names further as I have relations John SMITH snr and Jnr who were both Medical Doctors in Wick same period as William Smellie. (not to be confused with John Smith Surgeon in Thurso.
John Smith Jnr marries to a family who have SMELLIE rellies (Stirlingshire).

I don't know if the last two are related to William Smellie but it doesn't seem like a common name.

Tricia,
I found this about a Dr Smith and Dr Smellie:

Events > Accidents

Jean Farquhar was helping her son in Mr. Bremners sawmills, whilst her son was out of the room she placed her arm on the bench (on which the saw revolved) the saw almost severed her arm and lacerated it badly. She had to have her arm amputated by Drs Smellie and Smith.

To Missbitty:
Thanks for all the data. It all helps. I am away to search further now.

Just for info the other SMELLIE name in my tree on John SMITH's line was sometimes recorded in early 1800s as SMEAL etc Name also Smillie in some census

Where do you relate to The Sutherland and Miller family?

Tricia
born in Wick.

Tricia,
My line is James Patrick Doull Calder Sutherland. He was my 3rd great grandfather. So Jane Miller and Donald Sutherland were my 4th great-grandparents and Robert Miller and Anne Bain were my 5th great-grandparents. William Smellie would have been Pat's (as he was called) uncle by marriage to Jane's sister Anne.

I see you were born in Wick. My cousin is going to spend a few days there in June (lucky devil!). What would be some good places for him to go for research purposes and just to see nice sites?

Thanks,
Kisha
