Sorry folks, I never told you why the answer was right, regarding the deaf man!
He was deaf, and had been cured, therefore the phone ringing was like proof that he could hear.

I'll give you another while I'm here, which I think you'll get, but here it is:
A fire breaks out on an aeroplane, causing alarm amongst the passengers in the cabin. Suddenly, a very concerned man gets up out of his seat, and throws open the emergency escape hatch, and plummets to the ground. It transpired that he survived.
