Red admiral butterfly

Hi !
Just watched a red admiral butterfly literally SQUEEZE itself between loose boards on our garage door - obviously going into the garage !! Is this normal behaviour for a butterfly at this time of year ?

Are you sure it was a red admiral and not a tortoiseshell butterfly as they will squeeze their way into buildings and houses to hibernate.......I usually have loads in the house during the autumn and winter, tucked into the corners of my old wood ceilings. :)

Yes, with hindsight, you're probably right, it would have been a tortoiseshell . Thanks for info!

I just saw a red admiral in our garden - they are similar to the tortoiseshell but the red colour makes more of a circle with more black in the middle - very pretty - I think its only the second one I've seen this year !
