OH bought me a couple of landscape photography books for my birthday last week and one thing that made me think was the statement that there's no such thing as bad light, there's just the wrong light for the kind of picture you're trying to take, so be creative and switch to something else.

So as I was sitting on the west side of Strathy Point yesterday afternoon, sea-watching (didn't see a thing!) and silently cursing the cloud cover, I remembered that bit of advice and tried to think differently:

These is definitely some truth in the statement "there's no such thing as bad light, there's just the wrong light for the kind of picture you're trying to take",
but having said that there some lighting conditions one is always going to struggle with!

I have tried similar shots to these, on the first one I would be tempted to crop top and bottom to make a more "panoramic" format, and increase the contrast, the sky definitely looks as though there is more interest to be drawn out.

Maybe you should try and get some shots done in the morning when the sun falls on the cliffs? I find Strathy is rather difficult in the afternoon...

Did a bit of adjusting on that photo I loved and came up with this. Now will have to get the OM to make it into a jigsaw!

North Light - will give it a go, thank you.

Raven - thanks for the tip, I'll try it, though I'm the world's worst person in the mornings!

Lizz - if you'd like the full-sized image file to re-crop and make into a jigsaw, PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.
