View Full Version : Are you important?

My previous post about Googling for hoaxes reminded me of a seminar I was at the other day. The speaker started off by discussing people who felt unimportant because they reckoned they were insignificant in our world. A pretty gloomy start, huh? She went on to tell us we were all important in our own ways. Hmm, I thought, this is getting worse, I didn't come here for a self-help session. But then she told us her criterion for importance:

I am in Google, therefore I am important.

It was a lot funnier in real life, I can assure you!

Anyway, go Google for your real name and tell us what the person in the first hit does for a living. But don't give us too much information if you wish to keep your real identity hidden!

My first hit is me. So I must be important. :) And if you believe that, then you'll believe anything!

Colin & Niall are important too.

But I must go and do something more constructive with my time on this last morning of work before Christmas. ;)

A Cork Cutter... but he died in the 1800s. Strangely, his son and my father have the same name.

I'm either important or common! I lost count of the number of references that came up, here are the first few...

I am a social psychologist whose work centers on issues of social
justice and reconciliation. I come to the UCSC Psychology Department ...

I was part of the story Ned Kelly and the KellyGang. See what happened....

I am also an American Writer of note.

I am mentioned 3 separate times on the first page of a google search. All the other entries on the page have my first name and my last name on them but they are not together as someone elses complete name, if that makes any sense?

Well that's cut me down to size. I used to appear as myself having been involved in a campaign to save a building from being demolished but that's now gone. All I'm left with is a signature on a petition for broadband and a bit of technical help with Word in a list of tips. That's limiting the search to UK. Go worldwide and it's much more interesting but not me. So I'm not just unimportant, I'm not even interesting.

The short answer is no, I'm not important. :)

But if you want to believe I've recently completed my Masters at a university in New Zealand, that's cool.

Well the best I could manage was a BBC reporter specialising in travel and a Cyber Chick who writes web sites so I guess that makes me very mundane.

Nice if it were true.. The next three are actually me..... Not exactly mega important but at least I'm listed.

Must go and check to see if the Mrs is listed... importance order and all that.
