Cut me some slack, I didn't even know the Melvich/Bettyhill road had been resurfaced.

This comment has absolutely nothing to do with your thread MM! I just notcied the book you're reading ;) Is that the set of books including The Amber Spyglass? Now known, of course, as The Golden Compass! My oldest son got those two books for his 13th birthday, which I read not long ago, but before the film The Golden Compass was even being filmed. Just wanted to say they are really good, and like the Harry Potter boks, are suitable for any age group! haven't got the third book yet though :( but intend to!

Sorry for diverting your thread btw :D

No worries. It is indeed (and will always be NL to me). This is a return reading. I recall the first time, a few pages in where the porter was described as heating poppy seeds over a candle to mix in with wine, as it loosened the tongue and aided conversation. My eyebrows almost hit the roof!

I saw the whole set in the Red Cross shop in Thurso, btw.

but before the film The Golden Compass was even being filmed.

Not at all. Much of the spirit of the first alternative Oxford was very much Slavophilic. There was a definite feeling of Boris Akunin there.

Animal rights?

From the IRA ceasefire to the Admiral Duncan bombing, they were the greatest terrorist thread on the mainland (and a significant one until that crazy day in September 2001).

Okay then.

Well at least that dismisses any possible capitist undertones.
