This changes the Warning to an Alert.
The colder weather is due to arrive over the weekend with snow for the north and north east. However some western areas may not see any real cold weather before another depression moves in from the Atlantic.
Areas at risk from snowfall
North, central, east adn southeast Scotland along with the N and NE of England(high ground chiefly); frost for these areas and most others away from western and south western coasts.
A deepening depression in the Faeroes region on Thursday evening will swing south east into the North Sea. Behind it Arctic air will move south into the Northern Isles and northern Scotland, where the rain will turn to snow for all but the lowest ground during Thursday evening into Friday morning. Ground above 500ft could get 5-10cm of snow. This weather will spread south over the Highland region during Friday and into the Southern Uplands and parts of north and north east England during Friday evening. As the snow moves south only a slight covering over the hills is likely by the time it reaches the north of England.
For a time on Saturday some sleet, soft hail or possibly snow showers are expected over hills and coasts exposed to the northerly wind. Further slight falls of snow are also expected for the northern half of Scotland, mostly above about 500ft.
Frost will become widespread in the areas mentioned for this Alert on Friday and Saturday night.
This Alert will self cancel during Sunday morning.
A new Alert may need to be issued for snow for the northern hills of Scotland during late Saturday ahead of the new Atlantic weather system
