Just to add to the watch below, the wind chill is liable to be above -5c here.

Weather type:
Cold Weather returns

Alert details:

This preliminary warning is valid from Friday 0300Z until Monday 1200Z on 19 December 2005

Colder weather will flood south over the whole country starting with northern Scotland during Friday morning. During the weekend air frost will be a common feature for most.

As the cold air comes south on Friday into Saturday the rain, associated with the onset of cold air, will readily turn to snow over the high ground of Scotland then northern England, as far south as the Peak District and northern Welsh hills. Falls of 10cm or more above about 1500ft are likely. Further showers of snow or hail will occur in areas exposed to the northerly winds, snow falling to lower levels for a time. On lower ground amounts will generally only be small. Other areas of the country; Northern Ireland and remaining parts of England and Wales will have frosts and some wintry type precipitation over the weekend in any showers on exposed coasts and hills. However, snowfall of any depth, seems unlikely for these parts of the country.

The 50,000 dollar question is what happens after this first burst of cold air.

Current indications from most of the models we use suggest it will be a short lived spell with the Atlantic beginning to take charge by early next week. Never especially mild but not cold either with wind and rain at times for many, perhaps some snow over the higher peaks in the north.

This initial Warning will be upgraded to an Alert as and when necessary.

Hmmm, question is.......will we get snow? Or just freezing winds and hail and black ice and sore ears and blue hands etc. etc. :)

last Friday's Groat has an article about how the Council are expecting a bad winter for the roads, lots of cold weather - summat to do with cyclical Atlantic weather this winter.

if it snows thats ok i can prepare for that while driving up to thurso but black ice you cant prepare for, im working over the whole of holiday season and cant afford not to make it into work so hope severe warnings will come to nothing.
