I have noticed alot of our ancestors seemed to have moved to the bigger cities around 1800. Does anyone know if there was a main reason for leaving the Caithness areas or was it just as simple as work?
Mine moved from Thurso & Wick to Glasgow.

Some of the movements to Glasgow were related to the Clearances. For example Sir John Sinclair provided a free passage from Glasgow to America for those cleared from their lands. Some intended to take advantage of the offer and made their way to Glasgow, but on arrival and seeing the ships and conditions remained in Glasgow getting whatever work they could.
