When listening to the radio this morning they were telling about a man who was selling kiwi fruit, he was told it only measured 34mm, regulation size is 35mm, he said he would give them away, he was told if he did, he would be fined £5000. This is totally crazy, if the banana does not have a certain size bend, or carrots are bent, they get thrown out. We are told by goverment to lower the carbon footprint, how much fuel, time, money is put into this to be wasted when there are so many dying in the world. Our goverment should stand up to this Brussel's rule. What do you think? Feel free to add any other crazy rules.

I agree it's mad, highlander. I can understand why a degree of standardisation seemed a good idea, but only so that you could say a product was grade 'A', not so you'd have to bin those that didn't come up to scratch.

There seems to be a ray of hope though - I saw on TV a few weeks ago (can't remember which programme) that this particularly crazy rule is being reconsidered, and that we'd be able to get fruit and veg that don't come up to the required standards. We could then buy our bendy cucumbers, undersized kiws and wonky carrots to our hearts content!.... and what's more, we'd pay less for them than for the 'standard' product.:D

Now that would make sense -let's hope it happens, though I imagine it could still take years to make the changes....:(

It is the same with UK fishermen, this is from a BBC report in Sept 2007..... "A recent report highlighted the problem that every year thousands of tonnes of cod are caught and then thrown back dead into the sea to comply with the rules of the European Commission's Common Fisheries Policy.
Fish which are undersize or exceed the permitted quota for particular species has to be thrown back into the sea but less than 1% of discarded fish survive so most is wasted.
Last year more than 8,000 tonnes of North Sea cod was discarded, that is more than 30% of the amount brought in and sold.
The UK cod quota is 18,000 tonnes
The report just released from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) shows that in "Subarea 7" - the English Channel, Western Approaches, Celtic and Irish Seas - 63% by number and 35% by weight of all fish caught are discarded."

There must be a better way to preserve stocks.

It's a shame we can't apply the same rules to politicians that don't measure up or are too bent.:)

What amazes me is not only the crazy bureaucracy but where the food comes from.
Do we really need to have fruit and vegetables from New Zealand, Zambia, Kenya, Argentina etc.?
Whilst appreciating the need for countries to export and earn foreign currency it seems absolute madness to be bringing these items half way round the world especially when we are constantly being reminded about our carbon footprint.
Quite frankly I could n't care less if bananas have a 33degree bend or if potatoes have a few knobs on them.
If fresh produce was people the do gooders of this world would have introduced discrimination laws by now!

Nice one, joxville! It's started me imagining some of our politicians as rejected fruit and veg. To me, Gordon Brown's now just a tattie....or is he more of a neep?

Whenever on holiday I used to think the qaulity of fruit and veg in markets and shops were no way as nice as ours.

What I have found to my supprise is the misshaped and odd size tomato or apple etc tastes far better than the graded ones we buy .
