One thing (of many) that strikes me about local bands is that they set themselves up as a group then sit and wait for the phone to ring. Serious about music?
Marketing is the key to the success of any product and to begin with you shouldn't wait for people to come to you. telling people your in a band ain't enough. Showing people what you can do will get you noticed.

But how can we get gigs if no-one book's us?

Well if the venue doesn't book you, you can book the venue! There are two good sized venues in Thurso that accept bookings for gigs.

But it costs money to book a venue and we don't have money!

It costs less than you think but partly you've got to just take a brave step. It's worth noting that you can negotiate with venues for terms which meet your financial level whilst giving them a suitable return from the customers.

If music is what your serious about it's takes input from yourselves as well as the venue owners and paying public. Those still at school have pocket money, others may have part time or full time jobs. We all have contacts who may be able to help out for free. You need to sell yourselves more.
Waiting for that next charity gig or drug awarness event isn't the way to get anywhere. Sure people see you perform but it's being left to others to set things up. As begginers in your field it's down to you to do as much of everything within your field to get people wanting your band.
