Taking pictures of garden birds this afternoon, managed to snap a hawk. May be this is the culprit.

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps nobody has told them the airports up here are closed this week due to fire fighters dispute.lol One from Holborn head.

Aye, I saw that too and regretted not having the camera. I was working at West Dunnet, and saw it first to the east. Then before the vapour trails had died away, the same appeared way to the west. It was almost a mirror image.

So it was either one very clever pilot, or two very clever pilots who had rehearsed it. Either way, and call me a cynic if you like, how exactly does drawing pretty pictures in the sky assist with the defence of our nation? And how much fuel was expended during that particular exercise?

Wouldn't think of calling you a cynic, but fully understand what you are saying. :) The pretty pictures are probably coincidental to the training these guys have to do. Air combat manoeuvering involves making tight turns in order to avoid the missiles and guns of an enemy aircraft, so one of the pilots was being chased and the other the chaser! If someone decides to enter our airspace as the Russians used to do and may even continue to do, they have to dodge whatever is coming at them. Jets don't use ordinary fuel as we do in cars, so the amount they use doesn't really matter.

Yep, scrumpysteve, I take you point on combat manoeuvering, and I stand corrected.

However, I do understand the difference between aviation fuel and petrol :).

Oil is a finite resource, and particularly in the present situation, when so many pensioners will be unable to pay their fuel bills this winter, I think it is inappropriate to fill the sky on a clear sunny day with vapour trails. Necessary defence of the nation or not, that is very bad PR.

And the amout of fuel they use does matter.
