I was just wondering what people think and feel about xmas ie is it a man made celebration full of bobbles and lights and pressies and stuff which results in some people making an awful lot of money, or is it the celebration of the birth of baby Jesus, or is it an old pagan custom? Right now I feel like doing it the pagan way........waiting until the solstice and then having a feast and a few drinks and forgetting about the all the other stuff! Feels a lot less stressful compared with all the shopping for pressies, writing cards, putting up decorations and trees etc at a time of year when the days are short and the nights are long and every 2nd person has the cold or flu. I know itll still all go glizty at the end of the day as thats whats always been done..............but what do you all think and what would you really want to do if you could?

From a womans point of veiw or mine i should say, its just more work , more cooking, more cleaning, more repeats on tv, more expence, more trudging round the dam shops looking for the right gifts, more toilet rolls as we all eat far to much, and yes i do like xmas , but not that much.

Oh come on, lassieinfife, stop having a go at Americans, just because you're suffering from pre-Christmas stress!

Christmas is alive and well in Continental Europe too, you know! Outdoor Christmas Markets start there at the end of November, complete with all the lights and decorations....

Sounds like a Bah Humbug statement to me. I may have enjoyed Christmas gifts more as a child, but I do enjoy Christmas with my children and mostly with my grandchildren watching them enjoy their presents. It would be stressful except for my time in church remembering the birth of the Christ child.

Yuletide is a pagan festival, coinciding with the winter solstice. It was decided{by those who know] that having Christmas at the same time was a way of weaning the pagans away from there religion to Christianity.I supposed it worked but in the village where I lived we still had mummers. My father was one ,every Christmas he and others from the village would go to the big houses round about and enact their play.It was a way of putting a few pennies in the coffers. My father was always Father Christmas in the play.Until I moved to the midlands Santa Claus was just someone you sang about, even now I say Father Christmas.I used to love Christmas when my children were small, but that is who Christmas is for, children.

It's been pretty well demolished by commercialism, although I do enjoy the carol services in Wick and Thurso - no adverts there except for charity collections. Makes a nice contrast!

The blokes that dress up as santa and stand in the Thurso precinct with a begging box at weekends before Christmas playing ear splitting crappy festive jingle music make me cringe - I hate passing them and tend to flatten myself along the opposite wall wearing sunglasses, or walk through Mackay's instead (or better still go via the Co-op) - though I give to charities in many other ways I hasten to add, and I appreciate the efforts of these good people (of course).
