Are most of your journeys less than 10 miles?
Are you sick of paying for rising fuel costs, tax, insurance and MOTs?
Worried about climate change?
Want a means of transport but not fit enough to cycle?

Then here is the answer (http://www.50cycles.com) to our problems. My neighbour has one and he says it is great and I often see him about on it. In energy terms, it gets equivalent to 10,000 miles per gallon of petrol.

Would you be tempted to buy one?:confused

At that price? think I'll give it a miss...

Both bikes were launched on the 1st May with availability later this month. The Forza (matt black, trekking bike) will come in at £1399 and the Forte (silver, fast city bike) at £1349.

They might be a bit pricey but some ordinary powered bicycles can fetch £600+ and cars £5000+. And think of how much a car costs us per week, ~£35 per week and that is before depreciation takes its toll.

Taking all that into perspective, an electric bike suddenly becomes quite a cheap option for single person transport. You can even get a trailer for the weekly shopping!

Some extra advantages (http://www.50cycles.com/info_adv.shtml)

Great idea. I would love to have one but I wouldn't last long on the roads over here.

I must admit that I've been looking into cheaper alternatives to my car for the multitude of in-town runs that I do. I found a nice 2 seater electric car (http://www.lightningcarcompany.co.uk/) - very sporty looks, 0-60 in 5 seconds, 250 miles on a charge and only 10 minutes to charge, 2.2p per mile to run - then I saw the £150,000 price tag

This does look like a more feasible option so thanks for the link - I'll do some more investigating.

np, I understand that the guy in the Bike Shop in Thurso was quite impressed with my neighbour's(the man from del monte) electric bike that he was considering getting a couple of them to sell in the shop.

Why not just go for one of these .. http://www.help-my-mobility.co.uk/off_road_wheel_chair.html .. much more comfortable and it can go off road.

Plus you can legally ride it on the pavement and barge your way through, couple of go faster stripes and a set of alloys and that'll look sweet.

It is a good idea and would be a lot cheaper the thing that gets me is u can get petrol engine kits for push bikes that are very econimical to run than cars but beacuse of the nanny state we live in they have to be taxed silly really because its another better alternative to using car

I think the slow speed of those would be prohibitive for most town journeys. An electric bike on the other hand can get up to 25 mph on the flat which is quite respectable for around town.
