View Full Version : The Yard, Wick

Since the Wetherspoon's thread is now closed I felt it only right that I should comment since I only caught up with the story.

Firstly, (this really annoys me) I would like to say that the barred list for The Yard comprises of a 3/4 A4 page and in comparison to the camps of 7 pages I don't think that this is too bad. When initially taking over all previous bars by previous owners were lifted and everyone given a new chance. Undoubtably some of these people did not take long to find their bar re-instated for various reasons.

I would like to point out that anyone who has been barred from the premises so far has either been for an illegal related offence of if they are causing distress to other customers. In order to sort out a pub which was in such a state it was undoubted that there would have to be some barring to sort the problem.

Secondly, I do not have a problem with being gay so why should you? I have never hidden my sexuality and really don't see why I should? I can also 100% guarantee that nobody has been barred from the premises for making a jibe at this although sometimes I would love to.

On the note of the kitchen there have been some staffing issues within it but as of this week there is a new head chef and I am confident that there will be no issues with food and if their are I will certainly deal with any customer complaint in the correct manner. ALSO NOBODY HAS BEEN BARRED FOR COMPLAINING!!!!!

Hope this clears some things up.

Jamie

It is early days for you, don't worry. Anytime I have had the occasions to eat and drink in the premises I have had no complaints.
You will never please everyone.

You''ll always get a small minority of ignorant plebs slagging off anyone who tries to make a go of anything.

Usually these people are the ones who have never done anything of worth themselves and are destined to spend the rest of their miserable, pointless existances making snide remarks about those who are prepared to get off their arses and make an effort.

Ignore them, the only useful thing they will ever do is die.

Good on you jamie for coming on here after all the things that was said about you in the spoons thread how in gods name you got dragged into it is beyond me but did get a bit out of hand. You dont need to justify your sexuality to anyone if your happy to hell with everyone else your not doing any harm thats what i always say. I havnt had the pleasure of drinking or eating in your bar yet but i am hoping to soon.

Stories and rumours... hmmmph. When was the last time you heard someone tell a story that they got barred and it was their own fault?

I haven't been out since I moved to Wick (2 and 1/2 years) and half the battle has been figuring out where to go. Problem solved. I'll be popping down to The Yard this weekend. :D

I've been in a few times for lunch when I'm working in Wick and have to say it's a great place to eat and a lovely atmoshpere. And Jamie well done to you for being open about your sexuality, although living in such a small minded place can't be that easy. I have 2 friends who left Wick for that very reason. So good on you and keep up the good work in the Yard! You'll get your rewards, good Karma to ya!:)

and as the post states giving cheek and falling out with someone, as an ex bar worker I would bar them for the same reasons. People working in bars are not there for anyone to degrade and abuse as they see fit although many seem to think they are.

Barmaids/Barmen are quite right to bar any cheeky sods, they are not there to take that kind of crap.

'Being cheeky'?

Small children are 'cheeky'.

I'll lay good money that the plank who got barred was being loudmouthed and offensive.[disgust]

I hope he wasn't crying on your shoulder at the injustice of getting barred for being a ? He got what he deserved, buy him a box of kleenex.

Once again the self appointed moral majority gets up on it's soapbox.

If you're going to start barring everyone that gives a bit of abuse to bar staff then your not going to have many people left to serve, maybe the old duffers who make a Gin & Tonic last 2 hours...but not the people who are putting big money in your till, when i was a barman there was always drunken abuse flowing about....big deal, threats on staff is a different matter, but a bit of drunken abuse is nowt to get your knickers in a twist about.

Just because someone buys a drink does not give them carte blanche to abuse staff, physically or mentally. Your mate was being a and you don't need to think too deeply about morals to realise that.
Btw, those knickers would chafe too much and the wife would get ratty about me wearing them without asking.

And the person in question was barred for being rude, loud and obnoxious to other customers after being given several warnings. They were asked to leave the premises and come back when sober. They declined the offer. Hence the bar which has now been lifted.

The only bar I'd lift would be an iron one, just before I brought it down swiftly on their thick heads[lol].

Working in a bar is still a workplace. Do you put up with all that abuse at your work?
Maybe it depends on what kind of atmosphere your trying to create? The Yard might be better suited to the G & T Brigade ? y / n? There are plenty ways of making money.

Having read the thread isnt the bottom line that Jamie is the gaffer and if he says youre barred then its for good reason ??, I dont live in Wick now but I do remember Jamie working behind the bar and he was always pleasant and polite, not the type of guy to be petty or throw his weight around. Glad to see that you are moving up and the best of luck to you.

Having once gone out with a barmaid I was appalled at the lack of respect shown to bar staff in general. She told me often enough not to go into the bar as it would wind me up, it did one night and it was amusing to see the change in attitude beween him being abusive to her at the bar and being escorted by me outside and asked to repeat what he said. I regard people of that calibre as nothing more than oxygen theives.

Anyway, hope it all goes well for Jamie .. book us a Guinnes Extra Cold for August !!

WickLad08, I totally admire your honesty and determination, I just hope those s don't grind you down. It's not only wick that has aholes, but they do seem to have more than their fair share right enough. I will say this about Wickers, if they like you they will be behind you 100%, but if they don't I'm afraid it's still the same. Let's just hope the drunken neds never outnumber the decent folk. Keep up the good work x

It is good to know that the new management won't tolerate boorish behaviour. Putting up with verbal abuse and such like is what makes some places intolerable for decent customers. From what I can see, when managing a licensed premises, you either choose to go down the route of pile them in, take their money, throw them out brigade or you build up a rapport with your customers, protect them from louts and loud mouthers and make a good name for yourself and enjoy your business as well as make money.

Good luck to you Wicklad; I wish you well.:)
