If you like taking pictures of odd shipping, heading this way at the moment is a large floating crane going to be going through the pentland firth in a couple of hours at a guess. Just approaching Strathy Point at 10kn at this moment.

should be quite a sight!

if you use the AIS (http://www.shipais.com/currentmap.php?map=Orkney) look for a yellow symbol called Asterix which is the tug towing it, the crane is called 'Samson'.

I saw it passing Mey a wee while ago and it was a sight indeed.
The nosey Caithnessian in me wanted to know more so i looked it up on AIS and its bound for Grenaa in Denmark. Hope its flat calm for them cos it looks like it needs it.
Bairn C was delighted at seeing a 'beeg craney in e sea'.

Did anyone get any decent photographs of the crane? It clashed with my shift times for the best shots for me :( I got a couple from the caravan park in Thurso as it traversed the bay but te camera is in the car and i am to too peed to go get it and sort it out.
It was an awesome sight.

100% crop out of my pic, only on a 50mm lens so not great but you can sort of get a good idea

Exactly what I thought just before I saw your post. Nessie definitely on a mission there, and looking her most graceful.

I saw that (or similar) going through the firth app. a couple of weeks ago. It was during the night and it was an eerie sight; couldn't think what I was seeing at first.
