Why is the Countess of Sutherland seen as Chief of the Clan Sutherland?
Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think she has any Sutherlands in her line. Anybody throw any light on this for me?

The last Duke had only a niece as heir Mrs Charles Jansen Countess of Sutherland Baroness of Strathnaver inherited the title in 1963 on the death of the last Duke
her Son Lord Strathnaver will Inherit the title on her death His Heir born 1981
Now Im not quite sure of this bit but I think the title returns to Earl rather than Duke following on from the Countess
maybe someone else has better knowledge
