Bit disappointed to hear auction maybe won't go ahead because of lack of take-up.

Come on folks, surely you've got stuff to sell!

First auction 15th June. www.caithnessauctions.co.uk (http://www.caithnessauctions.co.uk)

I am a bit supprised by that as there was lots of enthusiasam when first talked about.
I would think most folk will sit on the fence and see if its a good auction or not before they commit themselves to sell.
Good luck all the same as it did seem a like a great idea.

Just had a look at their site but can't see anything about it being cancelled. How about some of the folks who are selling on here trying out the auctions.......go on, give it a go.....

Sorry, meant to say "might not" go ahead rather than won't! Hopefully folk will take advantage of the opportunity to sell their stuff so it can go ahead.

Was lots of enthusiasm at first. Maybe needs some better publicity(?)

Big A, I appreciate your comments, we need negative as well as positive opinions to see which is the best way we can go with the venture.
"Pay to view the goods on sale". I am a big supporter of the British Red Cross. I have done many fundraising events for them before and I am running a marathon in October for them. The "pay" is only £1 donation paid at the door which goes straight to them.
"Not go to a sale in a hotel on a sunday morning". After speaking to lots of people, we came up with this venue as being the best, just for the first auction, as it satisfied most needs. It's Local, walking distance for most people, easy to get to, car parking, easy access for drop-offs. A Sunday as most people have weekends off work and with the catering available, can make it an enjoyable day. We looked at many venues and the Weigh Inn was the best available, perfect for what we need.
I have been away from the county a few years so I have no experience with previous auctions not delivering promises. We are literaly testing the waters with the first Thurso auction on the 15th, raising hopefully a lot of money for a couple of charities, one local and then seeing where to go from there. If the demand is there and the auction proves popular then a proper auctionhouse will be set up with weekly auctions. All takes time and first we need to see if the support is out there. With all the rises in prices of household items and fuel, a local place to grab bargains and make profits in the specialist lots, seems like a good concept, but we will see.
Kevin, torvaig, yummymummy..thanks for your positive comments, keeps us going!

Frey, if you were to hire Quoybrae for a Sunday auction ,pay people a £1-00 to come and have a look, dish up free sandwitches and deliver goods free of charge, you will still get negative feed back from a minority of people .
I think what you are doing is great.
I think the way you have gone about trying to set it up as first rate.
Most of all I hope it will be a great success and be here for many years to come.
Once again ,best of luck and good fortune in your new venture.

Well I'd definitely go but I'm away on the 15th, so hope you'll have more. Also happy to give £1 to Red Cross. I really miss the Caithness auctions and always found the Quoybrae one too difficult to get to after work to have a browse first as there was so much stuff. Also you had to sit through hours of rubbish to get to the furniture in the back, which never seemed that great.

I was wondering if you were charging enough actually. Did you say there was no charge to buyers? The old auctions put 10% on the buyer's cost. Hope it goes ahead and worth your while.

I totally se eboth points of view- having just moved away from working in auctions for the past 4 years all I can say is GOOD LUCK - you'll NEVER please everyone and you're foolish if you think you can ..... auctioneering must be one of the most thankless jobs EVER - there's no way you can get always get the best price for the seller and the buyer at the same time - there's aye someone moaning.....you let that go to o cheap - you never got enough blah blah blah ......

Experience is everything - who have you got to sell ? a bad auctioneer will be the end of it!!!

The only problem I have, is with the web site. I have great difficulty reading the back text against a dark green background. So I was not able to find out when or where the auctions are.

Sorry.
