There was a post in the photography section about missing a photo opportunity of a large cruise ship passing through the Pentland Firth.
You can check ship movements through the Firth and around Britain here - http://www.shipais.com/currentmap.php?map=Orkney

Hover your cursor over the vessels to bring up their details, ie heading, speed and destination.

There's a cruise ship heading for the Firth right now. Its the " Island Sky " , heading for Loch Ewe. :)

This one uses the same info, but uses a googlemap to show the ships. Plus, it refreshes every 60 seconds, much more often than the AIS one.

That's interesting but the AIS site is better visually, having names and course visible. The refresh rate hardly matters for ships doing 10 mph.
Thanks for the link though. :)

You can do this on any computer via the internet better than that go to www.shipplotter.com and if you register the program for 25 euros you get access to the internet sharing all over the world and all you have to do is download suitable charts via the site and you can also use it with a scanner set to the correct frequency and updates etc are free
Been using it now for a couple of years and it works very well
