The Government is to bring in new laws making it a criminal offence to discriminate against people in military uniform and impose extra penalties on those convicted of assault or harassment of service personnel.

The new legislation will be among 40 recommendations in a report adopted by the Government, including an Armed Forces Day bank holiday and a drive to enrol state school pupils into cadet forces.

Having read about service personnel being abused in Peterborough and the army officer refused entry to Harrods this comes as good news.

The days of service personnel having to go around in mufti for fear of being shot or blown up by the IRA are over. They should not now have to go around for fear of offending someone because of where they happen to have to serve...

I find this utterly disgusting. Men and women have fought & died for this country and the result is spineless yobs being abusive. We NEED some form of national service-teach the young, especially yobs, the respect that their parents failed to instil in them.I don't mean the regular Army,Air Force or Navy being forced to take them but something similar the T.A.

The Peterborough Evening News used the Freedom Of Information Act to actually find out why the service personnel were banned from wearing uniform in town. Not quite the torrents of abuse hurled upon them as the national press reported...

Just three incidents were formally reported to RAF Wittering between June and October 2006.

They involved a member of the RAF, living in private accommodation in Peterborough, reporting three incidents of criminal damage; a window at the residential property was smashed, the rear window of a private car was smashed and, on a separate occasion, scratches were made to its side panels.

The base said incidents of verbal abuse during the period were not formally reported at the time and, therefore, could be considered only as anecdotal.
