Don't know if anyone remembers but, a few weeks ago, I had asked for possible volunteers to assist in the development of some type of project/ activity for young people in Caithness.

A number of people kindly but their names forward to help out. Could anyone else who will be available to offer their assistance, no matter how little, get in contact with me at youth.development@politician.com or send me a private message.

Could the people who previously offered their assistance also get in contact with me at the above address please.

We will need people who can just volunteer time to help out in general and also ones who can offer skills such as administration, running of businesses, accountancy, advertisement, fundraising, consultations etc..

The 1st phase will involve online communication to get things started. This will include email, instant messaging and telephone communication.

The 2nd phase will involve meetings which will occur occasionally once things are up and running and we've allocated different people to different tasks.

The 3rd phase will involve fundraising and advertisement.

The 4th phase will involve more advanced procedures including contacts with contractors, allocating possible venues and hopefully beginning to see the project develop more.

The 5th phase will see towards the end of the project and hopefully result in a well developed activity/ place for young people to be able to take part in activities.

It is hoped by the end, the project will be in place and running for the foreseeable future.

In total, with an optimistic view, it is estimated at least 2 years will be the time taken to be in the advanced stages of development. With a pessimistic view, it could take up to 4 years to see a well developed project.

It will be hard work but tasks will be split to different people and we'll not ask a huge amount of your time. So please if you're available to offer some time, get in contact youth.development@politician.com We will require the assistance of both adults and young people. At least 20 in total.

Any comments/ suggestions in reply to this thread will also be very useful.

Thank you.

I'm afraid with this little support and only 4 people so far taking the poll to say the support the idea, it's doesn't look like it's going to go ahead at all. Please, at the least, vote to show your support and any comments will be welcomed aswell.

Can I suggest that a different name for the group might be wise as there is already a Youth Action Service which is a social work working with children, young people and their families affected by offending, substance misuse and other difficulties. Being called the "Youth Action Group" would no doubt lead to some confusion?

The actual group though - what a great idea. There is far too little available for youngsters to do in Wick & Thurso which is why so many end up getting drunk on the streets, causing mischief etc.

Yeah I think it has always been a bit thin on the ground for the youngsters, tis a shame, hope this gets off the ground :D

Thank you for that. I'm open to suggestions for group names.

The reason I decided on the Caithness Youth Action Group is because, a few years ago, we originally formed a group of different members from different organisations, again in the attempt to get things started and we called it the "Wick Youth Action Group". At the meeting (the only one that happened), there was the Caithness Arts Development Officer, Youth Development Officers from Wick and Thurso, Caithness Volunteering Development Officer, Youth Forum Co-ordinator, Representative from Wick Youth Club, Pulteneytown Youth Worker and a few others including myself on behalf of the Big Lottery Fund- Young People's Fund and also leading the project. Unfortionately, not much action was taken. We discussed the possible opening of the Youth Club on a regular basis but not much more came out of the meeting. It would be great if these people could meet again along with youth representatives and adult volunteers.

Now, by saying this, I hope everyone will realise that I am actually being serious about this and trying to do something and not just making useless suggestions which will get no where. Just incase anyone thought that.

Rfr10,

A lot of things dont start out great at first. It all needs hard work and lots of it. There are too many sayers in this world and not enough doers as Edwin Collins put it brilliantly "too many protest singers, not even a protest song".
If the few of us who have signed up get it off the ground, then more people will get involved.
I have a baby boy, ten weeks old today and I want to see more activities available for kids in the area. Where are all the football posts, rugby posts, tennis courts, adventure walks, cycle rides, weekend clubs?
Im sure to those of us who care, we will work hard, lets get it going!

Very, very true Frey. I'll wait a wee while yet just to see if any more people decide to join and I'll have a word with a few more people I know and ask them to help out. I'll also get in contact with youth workers, the Arts Development officer, etc.. as stated in the above post and see if they can offer some help aswell, although they will not be able to get directly involved in the project as employees of the Highland Council but possibly outwith their job.

Anyway, thanks for that information!

If you just send an email to youth.development@politician.com or leave me a PM, providing your name, phone number, address and any skills (if any) which may be beneficial to the group. After you've done this I'll contact you to confirm that I've received your email and then I'll get back in touch in the very near furure to let you know what's happening.

You can also email me at robin.falconer1@btinternet.com or go to:

http://www.scottishyouthparliament.org.uk/UserProfile.htm?domId=a456cee9-471e-42b6-b466-4262efd4a988.

And click "Email this Member" Whatever way you choose, it all gets to the same person :Razz

Take a look at the article on the front page and you'll find out there in more detail.

Thank you to the seven adult volunteers who have offered to give some of their time towards this project.

I'm yet to find more young people as I have only been in contact with three so far.

I would be great to have as many adult and young person volunteers as possible so once again, I'll ask anyone who can offer, even a small amount of time, to come forward and email me on the details given in above posts.

I will arrange a meeting sometime in the next 2 months, hopefully sooner, and it would be great to see as many people there as possible, even if you haven't contacted me yet. I'll post details on here once I'm certain of a meeting date and anyone can come along who has intentions of helping out or if you just want some more information about the project.

I also hope to have Youth Development Officers, Youth Workers, Arts Development Officers, Youth Club Co-ordinators, Volunteer Development Officer, the school representatives for Highland Youth Voice from Wick and Thurso, representatives from Pulteneytown People's Project, Youth Forum representatives, one or two councillors plus many more. I'm also friends with the son of the Highland Council area manager for C,S,E.R. so hopefully with some persuasion, him and his dad might come along too! :Razz Won't guarantee it though.

Most of the meetings are likely to take place in Wick, however, I'll make every effort possible to have meetings in Thurso aswell.

At the first meeting, we will have to elect the following

Chair (which will be me)
Vice Chair
Secretary
Treasurer
Task Leaders & members
Advertisement & Publicity (inc. Press & Media)
Consultation
Fundraising
Any other suggested roles

It has been suggested that I set the group up as a registered charity or possibly a sub group of Caithness Youth Forum which already has a constitution and bank account in place.

So, if you're able to offer help, email robin.falconer1@btinternet.com or any other known method of contact for me.

Thank you.

We currently have 10 potential volunteers for this now. We really would like to see at least 10 young people and 10 adults though.

Please, if you can spare a little time, at least once a month, contact me at robin.falconer1@btinternet.com

I will be attending a meetin on Wednesday with regards to this and following this meeting, I will contact everyone who has volunteered to arrange a meeting. If we could get another 10 people before then, that would be great!

It is likely we will form a sub group of Caithness Youth Forum when the forum goes through a restructure in August. The project will now be focused on the Wick area more than Thurso due to Thurso already having a cinema and bowling alley and arcade in place, also there are already plans for a project in Thurso.

We are hoping to work with PPP in Wick and are currently awaiting contact from them and CVG.

It was decided that the "Caithness Youth Action Group" intentions are basically the same as Caithness Youth Forum therefore with more staff and members, Caithness Youth Forum will be able to do the same things.

I will be in contact again with all people who have volunteered in August once the Youth Forum is restructured.
