I downloaded a free version of google earth about 2 years ago and often use it. I would guess that most of the details on it are about 6 years old and decided it was time for an update.
I deleted my old version and emptied my bin and typed into my browser google earth.
Up popped many offers so I clicked on the first one which said was a free download for the 2008 version.
As I got deeper and deeper the deal was suddenly £35-78 for 3 years and atoumatic updates for free and I could pay with my paypal account. I enjoy the service and went for it.
After many frustrating hours my down load timed out and I then went for option 2 of download.
It downloaded ok ,but not only was it the same version as the one I deleted but had my history as well.
So now I am £ 35-78 lighter with high blood pressure and the old version of google earth. GRRR:mad:

The imagery on Google Earth is updated (or not as the case may be) often - you can usually tell how current the image is by checking the copyright info at the bottom of the screen as you zoom in.

I say "updated (or not as the case may be)" due to the fact that the imagery for my village used to be about a year old. I could even make out my wife sat in the garden. Now though, the image is about 5-6 years old. It may be even older as some sections of the village show an area which was planted up as a nature trail about 15 years ago and the healthy woodland that is there now is shown as just being a grassed area with saplings.

I'm not sure why the images are replaced with older ones - it sort of defeats the point of it. Maybe it is dependant on the companies who supply the imagery shot from survey aircraft...

Are you sure you got a legitimate version? I thought Google Earth was free unless you go for the Pro or Plus versions. I just downloaded the latest free version from Google's site and it hasn't asked for any money.

Must admit that while the images for the Thurso area on http://maps.live.com are a good few years old, you can get right up to 25 yards above the ground for great pictures, and you don't even need to install any software to make it work...

Yeah, that's all very well for people in Thurso. I notice the coverage for Wick is virtually non-existent, much like on Google Earth in fact.

http://peoplesmap.com/ is the only place I've found detailed coverage of Wick.

Try here (http://peoplesmap.com/?y=950998.75&x=336262.5&level=9&layer=IMAGE&layers=IMAGE,PEOPLESMAP,POPULAR,PEOPLESMAPU&overlays=) and zoom right in.

I am not sure how legitimate it is Geo. What I do know is its the same as the one I deleted complete with drawing pin markers that I have put in over the last 2 years.
What I assumed I was buying was a 2008 image of the world that would update every time I went on line.
I think sombody up there zommed in on my house and found its got mug written on the roof.

That's much better for Wick - thanks for that MA

It could just be using your previously bookmarked spots, pulling them from the file on your hard drive held over from your old version of Google Earth.

Have you checked the program version of Google Earth? Is it up to date?

I believe that all the data you enter into Google Earth is held in a file on your computer (com.google.GoogleEarthPlus.plist on my Mac) and so GE loads your previous 'places' from that list.
Unless you delete that file when you uninstall, any new installs will load them from the old list.
I'm running v4.3.7204.0836 (beta) and have never paid a penny for it...

If you want Google Earth just go to www.googleearth.com (http://www.googleearth.com) and you should be able to download from there for free.

To get the latest images for a particular area click on Layers then check the More box at bottom of list. A drop down menu appears, click on plus sign next to Digital Globe Coverage and another list drops down with the years from 2002-2008. Check the box for whichever year you want and the map will then have different coloured squares on it. Those coloured boxes are the image and the date it was taken.

In Layers you can also click on Geographic Web and from the dropdown list select Panoramio, this will give you photograph of an area when you zoom in on it. Anyone, after registering with Panoramio can upload photo's. I done a few for Thurso back in December and put more on yesterday but they won't go live until next months update.

I use G.E. a lot, one of the best programs ever and it's great for teaching kids geography.

You can clear the cache in Google Earth if you want. I do it about every couple of months, that way it keeps it up to date. Although I find it updates anyway.

Another place with high res is actually 192.com they cover most places.
