Don't usually do surveys as the questions are frequently impossible to answer, giving either irrelevant choices or gradings none of which can be answered honestly. This survey is typical and seems to have been prepared by someone who has never been anywhere near Caithness, let alone J O'G. It is supposed to be about J O'G but is actually about the area generally. They even think Caithness glass is still here [disgust] . There is nothing about the rundown hotel or the shops etc. What they should be doing is asking how the place can be improved and getting ideas.

I was going to send it to friends who have been up here but don't feel like wasting their time.

I expected a link to the survey.....
...but I found John O' Groats to be a worthwhile end to a long journey. I'd waited for fifty-five years to see the place and it was just what I expected...because I'm fairly experienced ( expectation wise) in life, and because I'm a realist.

If the place had millions invested and attracted a whole new clientele then I bet there would be more moans on 'ere than soft Mick. It's just typically British....an extremity...and that's it really.Downbeat, fading..but always there...like Britain itself really.

It's claim to fame is an accident of latitude and glacial erosion..I like it as is..but wonder how many people go back !? Not many I'd guess...isn't that the way it should be?

I just completed the survey and there is space provided to enter your own comments. My sister's friend was hired to do a study of John O'Groats a few months ago -- I don't know if this is the same company but studies have been completed. I so hope something is done, the hotel restored to its original beauty and clean toilets would be a nice start.

I did put a comment at the end. I thought we already had people looking into this, at least into what could be done with the hotel. It seems such a waste and the longer it's left the more it will cost to restore. It is a beautiful building and I would have thought could be a good business with people staying on their way to and from Orkney as well as visiting the north coast and seeing the fabulous views.

Wouldn't want the place turned into a second Lands End - not that I've been there but it sounds horrendous now. I just don't think this survey is going to produce any useful results.

I just did this survey.
In question 3 I think it was, they ask you have ever visited Caithness. I clicked that I was there within the last year.
A few questions later they asked why I had never visited Caithness and what would encourage me to visit.
Er!! Hello.... is anybody out there????

Thought it was me. I think a couple of questions were repeated, that's where the survey lost all credibility for me. I see the survey was commissioned by the HIE, so they have not checked and approved the quality of the work output by their consultants. imho HIE are a waste of space whereas j'O'Groats is not. All Groats needs, is a coat of paint on the Hotel and to be open for business, that would be a start.

Last Bank Holiday I was at Groats and I watched about ten tourists turned away by locked doors at 11:00 in the morning. One of the locked doors was the tourist board.

I have done the survey but was amazed by the irrelevant questions, seems like who ever put the questionaire together has been watching too much Holywood dross!
Thank goodness there were boxes where comments could be added.

Exactly - that's just what really annoys me about these things. I think it was the first question that asks if you're a resident of Caithness and when you get to the end you have to choose from a selection for where you live, none of which includes Caithness  .

It used to be part of my job to construct surveys and this one is incredibly badly thought out and executed.

In fact 'executed' is what I would have been had I turned in this piece of work to my boss.

........this one is incredibly badly thought out and executed.
My sentiments exactly. Clearly the people who are involved with the survey have not seen John O'Groats and have no idea what the place is all about. I find that rather insulting.

I fear that they have also made the results very difficult to compile as those finding no appropriate category to tick will be forced to elucidate in the 'comment boxes'.

More careful wording and cross referencing of questions at the outset would have saved them a lot of work in the long run..and made the end results much more accurate.

Yikes, I thought the questions would be different once one selected resident of Caithness or not -- obviously not. Like Karia, I have prepared surveys and the only positive thing I could say about this one is that I appreciated the space for comments -- very necessary since the questions were so pathetic. I just hope they capture the information from the comments box.

It looks like they already have their conclusions. I think they should turn it into another Lands End, it will keep the tourists happy and get them to spend some of there money in Caithness.

The Hotel Bar at the end of the road closed last weekend. The windows on the north and west gables are shortly to be boarded up.

You'd be suprised to hear how many visitors get to JOG and comment on the fact that they prefer JOG to LE, as LE is "too commercialised".

That's one of the reasons behind why it is difficult to identify a market for JOG - so many people are looking for different things when they arrive.

as much as I love JOhn O Groats and usually want to defend it to the core - well I suppose what i'm about to say is more with regard to HIE and RGA consulting.

What an awful survey - bad design, format , questions - I really dont see how information gathered can be quantitatively or qualitatively analysed.....im ashamed as a Masters Student to see a professional firm distribute something so terrible - and I wonder how they got the tender? obviously HIE aren't big on Assurance!!!
