Do any of you techies out there know if this system is a goer - i.e. can they succesfully replace a BT broadband connection in remote areas with poor BT / no BB compliant line?

What Broadband speed is likely? Is performance comparable? I can't really figure this out from all the techie info but maybe someone does?

Believe it or not to have satelite internet u still need a phone.Areas that dont have broadband or costs to much to put there u can get broadband of electric companys because the broadband connects thourgh an electric plug in the wall and it goes down electric wires to an exhange thats fact and u can use any plug socket house

If it is your only option do not buy that one.
Look here first http://www.sateuropa.co.uk/
Do a search for sat bb providers on yahoo or google .
You can use a standard satalite dish but yes u need a phone line as the sat brings the bb down and your phone line uploads. So you can get a decent download speed .
Pages load faster And things download faster but emails pictures and things are ju8st the same for sending . All
you need is a standard satalite dish and a TechniSat SkyStar 2 PC card .
Prob cost about £60 for the card.
Then get a subscription from someone like http://www.cpsat.co.uk/ .
I used these about 2 years ago . but there are many others so search around first .
But as i say use this as a last resort to any other type of broadband .

OK, so I need a phone line anyway, but it doesn't matter if it's a 'poor' phone line miles out inti the sticks? the poorer the phone line the slower it would take to upload e.g. e-mailing photos to friends?

Yeah any phone line will do .But you should get the same speed as any other phone line .
Have you thought or looked into home highway?
Granted only 64k unles you bind the 2 lies to get 128k . But much better than a modem as you get a true 64k all the time . It is what i used to upload when i had sat bb.

I just checked and Home Highway is no longer available to new users unfortunately.

I still have to check properly whether Broadband is likely to be available at the location in question - it's not very clear - how does one check this again?
