Two of my friends who are learner drivers, pay £800 for their car insurance as the main driver. Another two pay only £300 but as a named driver on their familys policy. I just received a quote to be added as a named driver and was given a quote of £1300! There must be something either seriously wrong with this quote or the friends are seriously wrong with what they told me.

Which car insurance companies offer cheap car insurance for young drivers. By cheap, I mean, under £600?

There are alot of different factors to consider when you are quoted car insurance...the type of car you drive, what kind of work you do, where you live, you and the other driver's driving records, to name only a few. You can't really compare your insurance quote with your friends.

Just shop around - but don't be tempted to lie on your application. You may save a few pounds on your annual premium, but heaven help you if you actually need your cover and put someone in the hospital due to an accident, cuz the first thing they'll do is check your cover and will have no compunction about cancelling it if you've lied. So you will find yourself without insurance at the time when you most need it.

Personally i am with Quinn Direct.
I went from £860 with allianz to £280 with Quinn.
I then changed from a 1.4 to a 1.6 MPV and they told me there would be no increase!!!!!!
Havent had any probs at all with them, very friendly and helpful.
Just the cover I needed, basic but with free breakdown cover.

What car are you going to be driving? that makes a huge difference.
If you go to to confused.com you can get quotes from a lot of companies at once, but you'd have to put in the main policy holder's details, plus you and any other named drivers.

It's a Rover 45 I'll be driving! I tried confused.com and it was them that had the cheapest quote of £600 with a company I've never heard of and it went then up to £5000! I checked with a company specialising in cheap insurance for young people and it still cost £3000!

i too am shopping around for cheap car insurance for a learner driver and the cheapest i can find so far is with Quinn Direct, and by cheap i mean £300 cheaper from the rest!

It does depend on what car you have though.

moneysupermarket.com (i think) did it for me, they search all of them for you!

Sadly, high insurance premiums are a fact of life for teenagers, they are the biggest risk in the eyes of the Insurance Companies

I would guess that many young people go about starting out as drivers the wrong way around. All insurance is based on statistics and if young or new drivers crash Golf GTI's then it will be very expensive for them to get insurance for that type of car.Instead of buying a car and shopping around for cover, would it not be better to shop around and find out what the cheapest car for them to insure would be and then go and find that type of car.It may mean driving an older and slower low value car for a year or two, but with the money you will save while you get some no claims bonus under your belt will go a long way to getting that car of your dreams a lot quicker.
Safe driving and good luck

hubby was with swift cover, paying £204 for his,(full no claims and on a 7 seater zafira) then added me as a named learner and it went up to £216 !! so they are good.

however when he got a new automatic honda civic hybrid so i could have the zafy we had to change companys as swift didnt provide what we needed, with him being insured for both cars and me for the zafy, so we changed to admiral, where for £612 we are both(and me still a learner) fully insured for both cars, (not that ill ever be allowd to drive his shiny new baby!!!)

When my daughters (21 y.o.) took out their insurance for their own cars (as learners), they were both the named policy holder with me, an experienced driver with no convictions etc as the named driver and that reduced the premium. What you should not do, if it is your car, is put forward a parent as the policy holder with yourself as the named driver to keep costs down; this is very naughty in insurance terms.

To be given a quote of £1300 by our current car insurance company on top of the £236 already paid, this nearly doubles the cost of the car! There's no point wasting money on insurance this price if we could buy a new car for the price of insurance.

Can you actually change insurance companies before the end of the year without losing all the money paid for the years insurance?

Its a scandal. If you are prepared to pay that much for insurance it would be cheaper to use a taxi. There are plenty of them and they are very reasonable in price.

Well I'm learning to drive just now but I'd also like to practice between lessons so that I don't forget things and have to go over them again and again at every lesson. £600 is bad enough but £1300!? No way can that be a fair price.

I feel sorry for many young poeple of today in many ways as it does seem a lot harder to get a start. As I said in a previous post, go back to the insurance company and ask them what you need to be driving to get an acceptable quote and go down that root untill you have the age ,experiance , and no claims bonus. It is just a statistic thing and if young people prang expensive fast cars then premiums for that class of risk is going to be higher.

Can I just ask- could I be insured on a vehicle which already has two insured drivers with a different company?

Two drivers are insured with Zurich but I found a website specialising in cheap car insurance for learners and the quote was £180 for 84 days which altough works out the same roughly, still makes it affordable at the time until I pass my test. So would it be possible for the other drivers to remain with the same company while I'm insured with another?

If you want to do it that way, then get the policy holder to ring their insurance company and ask how much it would cost to add you just for 84 days (or whatever).
I know I've added people to my insurance for a week or fortnight before now.

Just been in contact with them and have been told that they will not allow 2 policies on the same car and the maximum period they will insure temporary drivers for is 28 days which isn't too good.
