Cool. Looks like we've got a Caithness.org forum Xmas day special at Squidge's house. I'll bring the Buckfast and the marshmallows. It's OK, I can sleep standing up in a broom cupboard if there's nae room.

One of the best Christmases I ever had was one of the least Christmassy. We started off in Val Thorens, the sun was shining, the snow was fantastic, and the slopes were nearly empty. We skied just about every slope between Val Thorens, Meribel and Courchevel. Christmas lunch was a huge plate of pommes frites and a shared baguette, washed down with a half-litre or two of beer, all in a mountain-top restaurant with steamed-up windows somewhere between Meribel and Courchevel. Ah, those were the days. Must do it again sometime.

It'll be great - Tugmistress can let us know if the weather will be oK on the way to Squidges...Dr Szin can work out how to divide the turkey and trimmings for us all...Rheghead can provide the fairy for the tree... and some of the youngsters can bring the jokes!

Then Fred can turn up just as the clock stikes six and remind us all that its a pagan festival and that the Americans are to blame for all the turkey suffering in the world.

I am really looking forward to it!!

Do you think that theres any chance that the government can ban xmas being mentioned until december?The law would include no advertising for xmas gift ideas outside december, no street lights until the suggested time of year and words associated with xmas are to be considered foul language when used at a time other than xmas.

Don't get me wrong, I love christmas, but I hate seeing it being immediately advertised the day after Halloween!

I am with you on that one Moncur, I hate how everywhere you go you are bombarded with Christmas advertising, songs etc, it has turned Christmas into one big money grabbing event. I am the biggest humbug in the run up to Christmas and then I get into the spirit of things on Christmas day, After that I wish everything would return to normal.

I will be working nightshift again this Christmas it doesnt bother me that much, It will stop me from over eating and drinking, Last time I didnt work christmas I had a 26oz steak and a bottle of my homemade wine and slept for 18 hours afterwards :rolleyes: I am better off going to work. I will get home in the morning and see my girls getting prezzies then its of to bed for a few hours and get up and have a smaller steak and some appletise. Then off to work, I dont need to watch the Queens speech, 007 or superman.

I am enjoying the retired life and am definitely looking forward to entertaining my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with the assistance of my wonderful wife during the approaching holidays. Ah Xmas............the nicest one we ever had was the year I dug my heels in and decided that I wasnt going to get caught up in all the razzamataz, I was going to do it my way........we kept it very simple, only bought what we needed and could afford............had a thoroughly good time. Its a mind thing........."you can choose what to make it", you can think bah humbug not that time of year again, you can worry yourself stupid by wondering where youre going to get the money and what to get everyone........that doesnt work........it only spreads misery and stresses you out! You can change your mind and think I am going to enjoy Xmas and the run up to it, rise above the misery and the worry and dont get bogged down by all the Hard Sell Merchants and the I Want Brigade, you can choose what you make it.............Its the atmosphere that counts more than anything at the end of the day...........have fun and enjoy it!

Very well said, phoenix, you have the right idea! It *is* the atmosphere that counts more than anything at the end of the day. Unfortunately, Christmas is far too commercialised, and there's no point in going broke, or in huge credit card debt trying to buy the "perfect" gifts for everyone! I do enjoy Christmas, with all the lights, trees and decorations, Christmas parties, etc. But to me, it's the goodwill, family and friends thing that's more important than impressive gifts! :)

One of the best Christmases I had was when my whole family was up here during a heavy snow and the power went off. We ate a fry-up cooked on a coal fire and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening playing god knows how many hands of whist - eventually by candle-light.

Ah, what a wonderful, totally non-commercial Christmas that was.
