Here are a selection of images taken today (25/04/2008) from Brims Ness, O'Neill Highland Open Surf Competition (all Canon 40D with Sigma 135 - 400mm lens on Manfrotto tripod) What great fun this is to photograph.

Deemac,
A great series of photographs, impressive.
Hope to try and get out to take some myself.

Just got back from Brimms, it's grey, raining, and all the sensible people have gone home.
North Light,
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I took the day off and got some good weather (though there were some sporadic showers - I arrived 11am and stayed till 2pm). Hopefully the weather will improve tomorrow and I plan to return. Lots of other video and photographic people on hand capturing the whole event.
Loved the all action pics Deemac here's waiting for the next batch.

phenominal action shots deemac would have loved to have been there to try get a few shots myself
Brilliant photos Deemac. I love the detail obtained on the waves, especially the 1st and 3rd ones.
It's hard to imagine how you could get the second photo without being in the sea yourself! The venue is clearly ideal for spectators/ photographers, with opportunities to get up close to the action.
Let's hope the good surfing conditions continue for the rest of the competition.
OK, here's some more taken the same day as the previous series.

More excellent images Deemac.
I hesitate to post this, but the best image I could get of surf yesterday evening was this

Fabulous shots Deemac - thanks for sharing!
Northlight, the best place for waves is at Brims Ness point just now. All the surfing is there. Thurso East looks very poor!!

Deemac,
Yup, I was at Brimms yesterday late afternoon, but they had finished a long time before I got there. Photo of Thurso Bay was taken on the way back, at about 6.00pm.
Have one of the Info boards in the hotel so can keep up to date with what's going on, at the moment it's saying next call at Brimms at 17:00.
Might try to get there a bit later on.

Went down 4.30pm on Saturday. No competition at that point (they said maybe a 6.30pm start - I left) Here's a couple of surfers practising. Upped the ISO & shutter speed for these one's :-)

Deemac, I was there from about 5.00pm, have to say that I could do with a longer one, but here are a couple of my efforts.

Wow these pics are amazing guys - thanks!
Great shots Northlight. I'm fairly sure we were taking the same run. I'm not clear where this competition is just now (like cricket I haven't the slightest clue how it is scored / or who won / or is winning!!) but I may return if the weather is good and there is something to photograph. So nice to get the opportunity for a world class competition to be hosted in Caithness (and to try some sports type photography)

Deemac,
Yes it looks as though we were taking photo's of the same surfer.
They started the competition at 6.00 am this morning, trying to get the first round finished. (Sun 27th)
Don't know how the scoring works, but each round has elimination heats.
I am in the hotel till around 4.00 pm, but if they are still surfing, and weather looks good I will go and get a bit more practice in. :-)

Here are a couple more from Sunday afternoon, light was not as good as Saturday, but the competition was on.

Nice shots Northlight. It looked to me though (see O'Neill website) as if the waves on Sunday were at least twice the size of my efforts on Friday and Saturday (I was looking after children ALL day - and watching F1 . . . . .) and I missed them (gutted). I assume it was in the morning only.
Also I recommend downsizing all your posts to 800 pixels wide (less chance of them being stolen commercially) and it will make viewing easier for those with smaller minotors/lower resolutions.

Cracking shots, Northlight - what lens are you using?

Deemac,
Thanks for the comments, I understand the waves on Sunday morning were excellent, I got there late afternoon, and would say the waves were no better than Saturday afternoon when you were there.
Take your point about image size, I normally post smaller images, 500 pixels wide, but I thought these deserved to be seen a little bit larger. The being stolen bit does concern me, particularly from my flicker pages, I don't want to have to watermark the images, but may end up doing that.
Best Regards
Jamie
cazmanian_minx,
I was using a 70 to 200 f2.8 with a 1.4 converter on a camera with a 1.5 crop factor, 35mm equivalent is 420mm f4. I could have done with something a little bit longer.
Just to show surfing is not all "Sun, Blue Sea and Sky, with just a hint of Gloden Sand" here are a couple of images from Brimms taken late yesterday afternoon.

Thanks :) I'm considering treating myself to a camera and lens upgrade once I've sold my flat and we've moved - and as my main passion is wildlife photography, I'm interested in how to get sharp shots of fast-moving objects from a distance!
Amazing pics, guys, thanks for sharing them!
Here's some images taken today (29/04/2008) at the O'Neill Highland Challenge Surfing competition final at Thurso East (Scrabster in the background) . . . and the winner is?

As part of my "Photo a Day" I needed at some point to add a Self Portrait.
As it's Friday, and a good day for a little bit of humor, here is a picture of a particularly silly old fool on Dunnet Beach!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3090/2456592029_c073ebf486.jpg
Now I've been considering the subject of a self-portrait for a little while, thinking that at some point during the year I would have to do one. Whilst perusing flickr in a particularly boring part of the day I noted a post from a contact, the silly hat raised a wry grin.
When my other half came into the hotel and gave me a piece of surf apparel we had been given, the O'neil special edition Highland Open Hat with a very large red bobble on top an idea started to form.
I admit there might be an element of plagiarism in the pose, the location had to be somewhere with beginners surf, and I of course, i had to stay in my depth.
Couldn't find a surf board either as the surfers have gone home.

I promise I will go back to Landscape Photographs after this!
Lovely tea cosy Northlight - cheered me up today - thanks!
