Have just watched the BBC 10pm news regarding China and its carbon emmissions. It is now officially, the most polluting nation ahead of the U.S. They are building two new coal-fired power stations a week and all of the carbon savings being made by the western world will be negated by the increase in emmissions from China's booming economy in the next few years.

My question - is what we are doing to reduce our emmissions going to be a complete waste of time?

What the UK is doing was a waste of time before they even thought of it.

If we stopped all CO2 and carbon emissions it would take less than a week for china to make up for it, we might as well facefacts that we cannot as a country do much here.

Build Nuclear. Lots of Nuclear.

We could supply 100% of our needs through Nuclear and it would make not one bit of difference either.

What we need are trading sanctions.

Should have started by pushing the US a lot harder, and still they are much greater polluters than China relatively.

We could all make a difference if we wanted to by refusing to buy goods manufactured in China.

Or if we face the fact that climate change is totally natural anyway, and even if all human life was wiped from the planet it would make sod all difference.[lol]

Lets face it, if the americans are prepared to sit on the fence (we will do something about it but we ain't sure when) why should one of the lesser nations take any notice? The whole world has gone mad and refuse to take notice of the warnings (it will never happen in our lifetime, anyway).

Just wondering if the hurricane count hitting america might make em take notice ....... lol

It wouldn't make much difference if it all ended tomorrow, the earth will survive long after we are gone

Because I am a kind person :D I will point out that you either did not hear, or IGNORED, the part of the news which stated that as a country China is emiting more CO2, but per head, it is nowhere near the top off the league.

I don't blame you for the mishap if it was an accident, but if it wasn't, stop trying to blow this out of proportion like BBC news itself did.

Celtic 302 - I assume your post is aimed at myself. We must have been listening to different news programmes because I thought the gist was that China is more polluting than the US but because of the greater population CO2 emmissions were less per head. I stand corrected if I've got it completely wrong but I certainly have not tried to ignore what was said or by inference twisted things round. Maybe, you can enlighten us with the facts?

Celtic 302 have just read your post again and apologise as I have misread it. Yes, I agree it did say that per head CO2 emmissions were less but it is still the most polluting nation due its size. I certainly haven't tried to ignore or twist any facts.

Agreed. If man is contributing to climate change, the only way we can stop it is to reduce global population by 25% or 50% or whatever. One way or another, this reduction will happen.

I believe you when you say that. As i have said to others this evening I apoligize for what I said. I have the habit of getting rather cranky at night. And i in no way want people to think I am standing up for China. The country has an appauling human rights record and the CO2 emmissions just add another reason to the evergrowing list of reasons for why it should not hold the olypmics.

I don't know if any one else saw a follow up report to this news item, but it was talking about the enviromental damage being done within China.
It seems that people in that country are now getting concerned, the Yangstze river being the prime example.
It is so polluted that almost all wild life has disapeared and people who for generations have relied on it for a living are now no longer alble to support themselves, also the water level has dropped alarmingly making it now virtually impossible to navigate on certain stretches.
Other points raised were that with the dash to commercialisation, the country side has become seriously depopulated and a country which once had the ability to feed itself with ease is now suffering shortages and rising prices.
Whilst not blaming China for wanting to join the golbal economy, they are now starting to pay the price and see a slowing down of growth. This in itself might just be the catalyst for them to clean up their act, but for the moment I remain very doubtful with the record of that government.

Whilst not really wanting to get onto the very thorny (especially in this part of the world) subject of windfarms (I can hear you all groaning) I read an article awhile back where China is forcibly removing people from their land in order for them to erect massive windfarms. Now, obviously, some would say that windfarms are better than coalfired power stations but its the way they go about things in this crazy country.
