Hello Forum

I hope there are some folk out there with some information on the above.

My g.g.g. grandmother janet Cormack born about 1797 (daughter of Aleander cormack and Margaret henderson of Olrig) married my ggg grandfather John Manson (possibly from Halkirk) in 1814. They had 10 children, the youngest of which is my g.g.grandfather Traill (sometimes written as wail or trail)
1. Donald Manson c 15 July 1816.
2. Jas Traill Manson c 14 2 1820 (died? In infancy? Later renaming child 10)
3. Alexander Manson c 31 08 1822
4. Sinclair Manson c 25 05 1825
5. William Manson c 11 11 1827
6. George Manson c 22 03 1830 (died in childhood?)
7. John Manson c 1 11 1832
8. Janet Manson c 5 05 1835 (Jessie)
9. Elizabeth Manson c 16 01 1838 (Bessie)
10. Traill Manson c 26 09 1841. Trail was born after 1841 census taken.

Traill left Scotland for manchester in the 1870's and I wonder what happened to his brothers and sisters? Donald was still around to witness his mother's death in 1862 but of the others I can find no trace.

Any information most welcome

Thanks

Linzi

I think I have some information that might help you - it's also encouraging for my sister and me too!

The connection is Sinclair Manson who married our great great grandfather, James Miller on February 1st 1845 in Olrig parish. They had four children: Alexander (my g.grandfather), John, Jessie(Janet?) and Jemima. They moved to Edinburgh at some point between 1863 and 1871 after the death of John in 1863 from typhoid. They worked on the farm at Castle Hill estate, Castletown, owned by the Traill family.

Alexander Miller married Anne Clyne and they had one child, our grandfather James Miller.

Sinclair Manson died on 11th February 1890. James Miller died in 1889.

Going back to your message - possibly Janet Cormack was the daughter of Alexander Cormack and Margaret Davidson? Janet Cormack died in 1862 and Donald witnessed her death certificate. John Manson died in 1843.

Jessie (Janet) was listed on the 1871 census as visiting Sinclair in Edinburgh.

I can let you know more details about Sinclair's descendants if you wish. And a bit more detail about some of the others from census entries. It seems they all have strong roots in and around Olrig.

Happy hunting!

Jane

I'm afraid I don't know who William married. The fate of most of the brothers and sisters is still a mystery although we're getting closer - thanks to JaneJ's Sinclair Manson connection.
