There is no such thing as Duty Free's in EU now, you can virtually bring home as much as you can carry as long as you declare that is is for your own use, the guide lines are usually 3000 cigs and 10lts of spirits over 40% Vol but is has to be bought duty paid in the country that you are holiday in.
If you buy from Duty Free shop then you are restricted to 1lt spirits and 200 cigs

Hi there,my mate bought cigarettes when he was going out to France and then had them taken off him when he went to board the plane....not sure how the new rules work so it's definately best to check before you buy anything x

My hubby brings back cigs every month and is only allowed 200 and they must be purchased on the plane as if not they can take them off you if you don't. ( thats flying from Africa with BA) dont know if that makes a difference .

If you have connecting flights inside of the UK, the liquids bought have to be placed in a sealed bag, or else when you go through passport controls again you will have to throw away what you bought. Make sure they seal the bag in Alicante.

If you are traveling to a European Member State like Alicante then you are not permitted to purchase alcohol or ciggies at your departure airport within the U.K. If you are going to somewhere like the U.S or Canary Islands then you can purchase the permitted limited quantities of duty free at the U.K airport of departure (and on the way back).
If returning from a European Member State you can basically bring back more than enough as long as it is for your own use. It is usually cheaper to purchase these items in the local shops before return from your holiday.

Canary Islands are european and part of the european community, as are Madeira Islands, Balear Islands, Azorean Islands, etc.

make sure you only bring back for yourself as they can take it off you if they think it is more than for personal use only and make sure you keep your reciepts. hope this helps. and have a wonderful time Alicante is really nice. and the temperatures are lovely at this time of year.

Sorry to disappoint your correspondant Ju but the Canaries are a duty free zone and do not come under EU customs regs. so only 1 litre spirits and 200 cigs from them! Balearics do come under EU regs but not sure about Madeira and Azores.
