February 1978, to be exact! As soon as I saw your first two photos, horse, I figured they were probably from then. I was still living in Thurso at the time, and the Great Blizzard of 1978 that had hit the Northeastern United States swept across the Atlantic and hit us afterwards. Snowploughs couldn't reach badly hit areas fast enough in Caithness, and some travellers heading south died of hypothermia, when their cars were buried in the snow. It was a terrible tragedy! I remember the train having to be dug out of the snow as well, but I don't think there were any deaths associated with that, if I remember correctly.

yes you are spot on ,February 78. i think that was the year that the salesman for sloans clothes shop in Wick got stuck in the snow in his mini clubman and survived by keeping himself warm by wrapping the clothes he had for sale around himself.
I was only 11 years old then but i can remember the news about those people who died of hypothermia. (i think it was between beridale and the ord)

Yes horse, I remember that's how the clothes salesman survived in February of 1978, and I think you are right about the location of where the less fortunate people died.
