I have always enjoyed looking around old churchyards and reading grave stones.
My favourite was on a stone in Claverly that was dated about 1860 that read.

Friend stand here and cast an eye
As you are now so once was I
As I am now so you must be
Prepare for death and follow me

I am sure that has brought a smile to many faces for 150 years. Has anyone else a favourite?

here is a couple..

Here lies the body of poor Aunt Charlotte.
Born a virgin, died a harlot.
For 16 years she kept her virginity
A damn'd long time for this vicinity.

Reader pass on and ne'er waste your time
On bad biography and bitter rhyme.
For what I am this cumb'rous clay insures,
And what I was, is no affair of yours.

82 years after my great-grandfather died, aged 82...I found his gravestone.
It read the usual name etc.... and...
'Thy Will Be Done'

Amen.
Mine: I don't want a gravestone for some local council official to declare unsafe in years to come...the wind at Morar can scatter me asunder....c.2035
I'll be all done with words by then.

And so you must be wet, like me

We were having a tidy up in our local church yard and I had the task of cutting back the brambles in a paticuarly over grown area with a petrol brush cutter. After much sweat and tears I finaly came upon a head stone that said simply, "gone but not forgoton"

I read this somewhere lately but cant mind where :-

When I was younger, at weddings all my old relations used to poke me and say "you'll be next, it will be your turn soon"
They soon stopped it when I started doing it to them at funerals though [lol]

Thought it was kinda relevant to this thread, now I'll have a think about what I want on my headstone !!

I love Billy Connolly's one. He wants a small square on his grave stone with small writing in it - the idea being you have to walk on the grave to read it. The writing then says "you're standing on my balls"

My aunt's father had his headstone inscribed:

A TELT YA A WISNAE WELL!

Always makes me laugh when I think about it. He was a lovely man with such a sense of humour. He didn't want people crying over him when he went!!
