Your answer to this will be interesting as I had an argument not that long ago with someone I said that £5 coins can't be used and are only for display.

Last weekend i was handed 2 £5 coins from a woman and i wasn't sure wether to take them or not, so i did, but i wanted 1 for keepsake (so i swapped it with a note) and i left the other 1 in the till and the next day at work i thought i would get hell for taking it but it was gone, a woman knew i had it so asked another assistant if she could have it [lol]

£5 coins are legal tender as are £1 notes , i see them often in our cashoffice.

Coins that are legal tender means whether you can spend them or not. Obviously Xmas choccy coins aren't legal tender or even a 1816 George III shilling anymore.

well all i know is i cant take scottish note into england as they get refused, as i visit england a fair bit i have to go down with no money an use a cash machine when im there so i dont have to go through the embarasement of being refused again :(
