My curse upon your venom'd stang,
That shoots my tortur'd gums alang,
An' thro' my lug gies mony a twang,
Wi' gnawing vengeance,
Tearing my nerves wi' bitter pang,
Like racking engines!

When fevers burn, or argues freezes,
Rheumatics gnaw, or colics squeezes,
Our neibor's sympathy can ease us,
Wi' pitying moan;
But thee-thou hell o' a' diseases-
Aye mocks our groan.

Adown my beard the slavers trickle
I throw the Wee stools o'er the mickle,
While round the fire the giglets keckle,
To see me loup,
While, raving mad, I wish a heckle
Were in their doup!

In a' the numerous human dools,
Ill hairsts, daft bargains, cutty stools,
Or worthy frien's rak'd i' (http://www.robertburns.org/works/glossary/949.html) the mools, -
Sad sight to see!
The tricks o' knaves, or fash o'fools,
Thou bear'st the gree!

Where'er that place be priests Ca' hell,
Where a' the tones o' misery yell,
An' (http://www.robertburns.org/works/glossary/40.html) ranked plagues their numbers tell,
In dreadfu' raw,
Thou, Toothache, surely bear'st the bell,
Amang them a'
O thou grim, mischief-making chiel,
That gars the notes o' discord squeel,
Till daft mankind aft dance a reel
In gore, a shoe-thick,
Gie's the faes O' (http://www.robertburns.org/works/glossary/1208.html) Scotland's weal
A townmond's toothache!

If you can't get the clove oil, gently chew (bite down) on a whole clove. If you don't have one a neighbour should.

I get the feeling we have gone beyond herbs here..the man is in really bad pain and needs a dentist...

Is there no emergency dentistry done up there at all now?
....not even if you hie yourself down to Inverness?... And/Or check into an A&E dept?

Shocking!

apart from the cloves, I would also recommend Paracetamol. It does more good than many are led to believe.
No more than 8 in 24 hours mind!

2x Ibuprofen have temporarly done the trick......thanks for the suggestions :)

I think a dentist is the long term answer ;)

Ordinary strength paracetemol are no match for bad toothache. You have my sympathy but the Dentist is the only long/medium term option. In the meantime if you know anyone who has some co-proxamol, co-codamol or co-dydramol lying about then up to eight of those a day will probably suffice....but go steady.

Is the tooth sensitive to hot and cold...or sore to the touch? The latter suggests a possible absess....if it's the dentists then NHS charge £42.00 for one filling, or six...crazy system which still costs a fair bit, but obviously cheaper than going private.

Oh poor Saveman! Hope you can get to a Dentist soon.:(

In the meantime you could take co-codamol along with the Ibuprofen and this should help until you get the tooth seen to.

Sorry to say Saveman but the tru pain is £15 per month for a dental plan that you only need for emergencies like this.

I'd agree with the clove remedy.

You won't think the toothace pain is bad at all once you get the dentist bill......from experience that IS very painfull indeed.:~(

Place a garlic clove on the sore tooth- this should immediately reduce pain.

Rinse your mouth with salt water.

Put vanilla extract on sore tooth.

Chew on a raw onion to kill the bad bacteria.

Make sure you take pleanty of calcium and vitamin C.

I'm fine folks......I think a sinus infection is adding to the problem but ibuprofen has done the trick for the moment......when I started this thread the pain was driving me to distraction, but thankfully it's not got that bad since.

glad to 'see' you signing in. Was getting a bit concerned.............thought you had been and had major intervention which left you unfit to surf.
Hopefully you will attend to the problem soon to prevent another painful evening.
Glad your Ibuprofen is effective, but watch the effect it has on an empty tum!

I have had toothache since friday night [mad]

A friend told me to go and get clove oil, it really works but tastes horrible, I have also been taking alot of painkillers and it has eased the pain, but will be phoning the NHS dental helpline first thing tomorrow to get an appointment

Poor you. No doubt with all the suggestions on this thread you will have found something to choose from to ease it. Obviously your clove and analgesic helps so stick with it.

I have been taking ibuprofen for years. Never take them without food.
They act on prostaglandins that protect the stomach wall. The effect is lessened by digesting food simultaenously.
Without food, regular Ibuprofen risks stomach ulceration and internal bleeding. They are an N.S.A.I.D. a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug...not a conventional painkiller. You might be better of with a strong codeine, or paracetamol based tablet. I'm sure you know that medium to long term a dentist is the only answer. In November last I had a huge filling in a back tooth, which has all but come away now. It cost me forty quid ! There is no pain as yet but it will come...it is inevitable. Best get it sorted next month.

That was me phoning the NHS dental helpline this morning and they phoned back to tell me that I couldn't get an appointment until tomorrow which I think suck big time, [mad], got stronger painkillers, pain not to bad now its alot easier
