Todat at 11.43 AM I received a call from a number displayed as "02202". I answered the call but did not speak, after 38 seconds the call was cut off.

I could only hear breathing and I'm now very freaked out.

Has anybody got any experience or ideas of what this is?

Cheers guys.

I didn't recognise the number and have recently been subjected to a string of abusive prank calls from some similar numbers.

Didn't want the episode to be repeated!

I thought it might have been o2 - I'm on their network, but they would've spoken.

Upon dialling the number I was told "The number you have called is not recognised, please check the number. If you need help call the operator on 100 from your mobile."

02202 is an international code.

It's a 3rd party phone upgrade scam, as far as I can tell. Seems to call people on O2. Ignore it.

I received a call from a similar number, it beagan with 02 anyway. When I answered a recorded message played saying press 9 to claim your prize!! I obviously did not press 9 and just hung up. Don't take it personally, probably a prankster.

Never ring back, you never know how much it will cost until it's too late. If they want to speak to you, they will ring back

Sounds like my best bet is to just ignore it.

The last thing I need right now is telemarketing sales!

ALARM!!!!!

I heard we had this attack a work on our telecon system. Basically if you press 9, what happens is that you allow your number to be used as a link from their site for them to call anywhere in the world at YOUR cost!!!

It also has been known as an "urban myth" on various continents, so whether it does actually exist I dont know - best not to risk it though eh?

maybe it was someone calling from the bottom of the steps looking for help....

No i am sure only slightly, that it is a spam number..we did an online transaction for insurance and we started to get loads of spam calls starting with 0220 you can contact bt aqnd they can block the number but just dont answer or if it gets to much blow a whistle down the phone, that should put them off......;)

Or you could just answer and keep repeating Hello, Hello, hello etc.....

I was called by a number similar to this before. Something like 020 and when checked it up, said it was a London number. I didn't bother answering. It took a long long time before they stopped phoning. I very rarely answer calls from private numbers or numbers I am not familiar with. Think this is the safest thing to do aswell.

Try checking the number on

http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/section/tci/old_std_list.shtml

I looked up the number 02202 but it stated that BT have not specified a rate for this number yet.

Yup, 0207 is north london and 0208 is south, if it starts with 011 etc it could be a private company - confused me first time I saw it :confused

Would 00202 be any area near London then or is it completely different?

Ah umm I would suspect that any number beginning with 0022 would be an international number as previously stated. Problem is that the "urban myth" theory was generated overseas so it could be a possible fraud

Oh heck, that's a bit far away.

I meant 02202 or whatever the number is that was being refered to in the 1st post.

Get a caller display then you dont have to answer the phone if you think it is a scam. Maybe it was an international call centre. If it was something important they would have left you a message, best to ignore it.
