Our computer is taking ages to boot up from cold. Its about 7 mins and counting. It also doesnt like being put on standby, sometimes refusing point blank. If you switch users it goes slow too.
Computer though not brilliant at booting up was tolerable but since oh ran Norton through it its awful.
Norton anti viruse didn't find anything either, typical.

Would turning of eyecones on the right hand side help and if so how do you do that.
Lap top connection is fine.:confused

A good start is to decide which icons down by the clock you actually need running all the time. A lot of people have numerous programs they only run infrequently but which are always on! Most should have an option to turn them off but you'll need to look to find them!

Another place to look is the Startup folder in Start > All Programs - either delete or drag out any programs you don't use all the time.

Norton is notoriously slow - bloatware thesedays - if you've just paid for it then that's a shame 'cos I can't recommend it. AVG (yes, even the free version available at http://free.grisoft.com) is a much neater and faster package and seems to remove nasties which others miss.

Other than that you can download Adaware (also free) from http://www.lavasoft.com and SpyBot (free once again!) from http://www.safer-networking.org are both worth downloading, installing & running to clear the system of any malware.

Let us know if that makes any difference.

If the computer is a few years old (anything more than about 10 months) then chances are its mostly bloated software that is the problem. Sounds like there is a lot running on startup. Take Bobinovich's advice and remove what you can from Start-->All Programs-->Startup.

The next step is to use MSConfig. This isnt too advanced but we can walk you through removing the startup programs using it if you like?
