Ive got a Toshiba telly. Just over 2 years old so theres no warranty on it. Once it's turned on the tv has a perfect picture but after approx 3-5 mins it goes a grey colour with rainbow colours at either side. You cant even see the picture but there's still sound. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? The last thing i want to do is to take it to TV specialist and get charged an arm and a leg as the tv was bought second hand 4 months ago for £100. With prices for tv's going these days i could pick a brand new 32" for around £250. I am willing to spend around some money on repairs but i have been pre warned that the time its looked at, labour and materials it will cost at least £100. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks

The only difference between a tv that's just been switched on and one that's been on for 5 mins is heat. Could be a capacitor breaking down.
Get the hoover out, with a brush and hoover all the dust out of the vents on the back of the telly.
If that makes no difference, my advice would be to buy another one. You get more for your money that way... shame that

This hapened to me once. It was an amplifier that was too close to the tv. Might not be your problem though.

Hi.
I had similar problems with a Toshiba set I had. It turned out that it had been "magnetised"? There was a more technical term for it but I can't remember it.
I turned the set off, unplugged it from the wall & left it for a couple of hours. The set had a "de-magnetiser" built in that was activated when I switched it back on. It made a kind of thump, but the picture & everything was back to normal. The best bit though, it didn't cost a penny & the set although now in the dining room, is 12 years old & still going strong!!!.[lol]
Give it a try, hope it works for you too.
Cheers.

That's why you should never put magnets (speakers etc) too close to the screen. The de-magnetising is called degaussing (you see it on monitors) the colours go doolally. Doesn't sound like the same problem unfortunately.

We would have to degauss the TV's onboard ship (Navy) every month due to them becoming magnetised. You could ask the local shop to demagnetise it (if you can trust them not to see you off) or get a metal bar or piece of flat metal (not stainless steel) and move it up and down and around close to the TV which should remove most, if not all of the magnetism.
If all fails look on Comet.co.uk and at the bottom of the page is Clearance Auction where you can get a bargain :D

Throw it away its not worth the hasstle if u pick up repair bill for couple of hundred quid and what happens if it breaks year down the road you would be better of putting the money towards a new tv that has freeview

If the gegaussing didn't work, before you get rid of it you might try the TV repairer in Thurso. They work up here, not sending the TV to Inverness at a huge cost before you know if it is worth repairing. It is oposite the police station in Thurso. I can't remember the name. The also have/had toys for sale.

Alacam you mean. Ye i will more and likely try someone local if it's worth it. By the looks of things, the tv is going to take a wee trip to Janetstown. may as well get a new one i think.

You;ll have to let us know how it goes....I thought the rainbows at the sides wouldn't be caused by magnets? Don't magnets just make patches of colour?

Does the Teletext work when faulty? and if so is the Teletext clock counting?
Does it still work through the scart socket at the rear with something like a DVD?

Dosen't matter whats plugged into it or not. Tv still does the same thing. Even when teletext is on. I have now unplugged the power from the tv and going to leave it for a while, see if anything happens. It does sit next to a radiator and im wordering if thats cheesing it of somehow. Thanks for all the helpfull hints an tips folks.

Our portable telly goes funny colours when the scart isn't plugged in properly. Only happens about twice a year when I dust!! Also needs a firm slap on top to get the colour properly about 2 minutes after it's turned on. It's still going though.
