If you noticed the "Tonight" programme on the T.V it was about people checking and maybe challenging Council tax Banding. It would appear many people have been in the wrong band and after a challenge had a reduction and refund.
The following details were provided at the end of the programme.

Perhaps it was a coincidence as the Council Tax bill arrived today but at least it is the same as last year. Might be worth checking and comparing your property banding with the neighbours. To do this go to this link and type in the postcode.

I just looked at my previos address and i think that my banding was wrong for when i stayed there but the form is only for current tax not past. I wonder if i could find out about it?

At the end of the day if it is wrong and you paid it then you should be entitled to a refund. If you owed them then they would chase you at your new address also. If you think it is wrong then might be worth looking into.

Council tax arrears can go back 20 years so I'd imagine if you have been over paying the same rules would apply.
I recently got a bill for £35 for council tax I'd underpaid 7 years ago !! I couldnt believe it when the bill was sent to my mums house as they didnt know where I now stay. I was reluctant to pay it but ended up just doing it. [disgust]

I had this problem when I moved in to my house and found out that only two of the houses on the street were a band B where as the rest of the houses were all band A.

Went throught the council to complain and had to apply to change my tax band. The paperwork came through and it did mention that reassesment could only be questioned during the first 6 months of a new owner or if recent changes to the house had been completed to increase or decrease the value.

Took about a month after the paperwork had been completed, the assessor came round to look at my house and stated that the orginal owners submitted plans for a conservatory out the back but they could see that the work had not been carried out.

Within a month the tax band had been lowered to Band A. I feel sorry for the last couple of owners knowing that the house had been on the wrong band for well over 10 years.
